"We were advised that there
were probably three people in the
residence," LVFD Fire Chief
Corky Cochran said. "We made
entry and there was very heavy
smoke so we used smoke fans and
air packs, but the lire was basically
out
"We did u head count and then
realized there were four instead of
three," Cochran said.
"We left two firefighters in the
building in full protective gear to
watch for hot spots and then we got
everyone else out, so as not to con-
taminate the crime scene," Cochran
said
Although the fire department left
the scene at 2:10 p.m., they left
behind a ventilation fan and later
sent over a light tower to illuminate
the scene as law enforcement
worked throughout the night.
“With the Escapees, although we
have over 60,(XX) adult members,
it's all based on family,” Robert
Brinton. marketing director for the
Escapees, said “We do a lot of
hugging. When we talk about car-
ing and sharing, that’s a philosophy
the club lives by.
"Everybody that you pass when
you're driving or walking, waves,”
Brinton said.
"All we know is that Floyd
Thompnon, long-time park resident,
ii the suspect in the killing of hli
wife, daughter, aon-ln-law and
grandson," Brinton said Friday,
adding that park reaidents were to
meet with representatives of the
sheriffs department later that day
to be apprised of the status of the
case
A local Catholic priest led a large
contingent of park residents in
prayer late Friday ufternoon at the
Escapees Clubhouse prior to a
briefing by the sheriff, which was
off limits to the media.
Nelson said the bodies were re-
trieved at approximately l:30 a m.
Friday by a local funeral home and
taken to the Harris County Morgue
for autopsies.
According to Nelson, Thompson,
who was retired from Union Car-
bide out of Texas City, was going
through divorce proceedings fol-
lowing 51 years of marriage.
Thompson’s son-in-law was a
graduate of Texas A&M University
and a retired lieutenant colonel
with the U.S. Air Force, Nelson
said.
Thompson remains under a sui
cide watch at the Polk County Jail
Noting that there is usually just a
handful of murders a year in Polk
County, Nelion said thut in his 12
year* is sheriff, he has nevci
known Livingston to have a quad
ruple homicide
Other than the Aug 26 murder ol
an Inmate at the Polunsky Unit by
another inmate, the most recent
murder In Polk County, a murder
suicide in February, involved an
elderly couple who resided in the
Escapees Cure Center
Escapees RV Park is located at
