Partor Lake Livingston Lutheran
Church, Onalaska
One day. Jesus was walking with
His disciples into the district of
Caesarea Philippi The city of
Caesarea Philippi, itself, was a ma-
jor pilgrimage site in the Roman
world because it housed a popular
shrine to the pagan god Pan.
It was there, in the midst of de-
monic spirituality, that Jesus asked
His disciples these two pointed
questions: “H7io do people say
that the Son of Man is?’ But who
do you say that I am? " (Matthew
16:13c. 15b)
Because we still live in a world
of alternative religions. Jesus wants
us to be keenly aware of heresy and
to be perfectly clear where we
stand in terms of our Christian
faith Therefore, are you standing
securely on the solid rock of Jesus
Christ; or are you losing your foot-
ing on the sinking sand of alterna-
tive religion?
Many years ago. I was a member
of a high school debate team A
fellow member on that team was an
upperclassman who was rumored to
be a "genius " Because of his supe-
rior intellect, students spoke of him
in admirable terms Because he
also professed to be a Christian. 1
respected him.
After high school, this highly in-
telligent teenager pursued an aca-
demic career and became a profes-
sor at a West Coast university
Within the last decade, he has also
become a well-known author in
academia Interestingly enough,
his chosen topic for research is the
historical person of Jesus Christ
Sadly, within lus writings, the dis-
cerning eye can sec that he is per-
sonally struggling with the second
of those two pertinent questions
which Jesus asked His disciples
“But who do you sav that I am >" I
continue to pray that our Father in
heaven will bring luni back to the
Jesus Christ whom he knew as a
child and teenager In truth, it is
only the Jesus of the Holy Scrip-
tures who is still researching him!
Can you join w ith Simon Peter to
confess that Jesus is " the Messiah,
the Son of the living God'" (Mat-
thew 16:16b)9
It is that confession which
prompted Jesus to say. " Blessed
are you, Simon son of Jonah' For
flesh and blood has not revealed
this to you, but my Father in
heawn. And / tell you, you are
Peter, and on this rock I will build
my church, ami the gates of Hades
will not prevail against n“ (Mat-
thew 16:13-18)
Yes. it is on the rock of Simon
Peter's confession that the church
of Jesus Christ is built: and no he-
retical theology, alternative spiritu-
ality or pagan religion can prevent
it At the same time, it is on the
rock of Simon Peter's confession
that our own identities are built as
well
As sinners for whom Jesus
Christ died, we liave always been
and always will be the direct object
of His love As a result, our "real
selves" can be safely laid bare be-
fore Him Indeed, it is only
through Him that we can become
the redeemed, restored and for-
given children of God
Therefore, won't you confess
that Jesus is "the Messiah, the Son
of the living God" this day9 If you
do. you will be God s redeemed
child for all eternity Amen!
Black History Month is upcoming
Hello Readers! What's the
WORD?
Please forgive me for not having
a column in last Sunday's paper
We were so busy with the Week of
Women in Revival that it really
slipped my mind. i
If you missed the revival, you
really missed a blessing. Each night
we went higher and higher in the
Lord. There were people who trav-
eled great distances each night to
be in the service, and we are grate-
ful that you trusted God and came
to be a part of what He’s doing.
The next two Sunday afternoons
at Grace Hill Churclt. we will be
having building fund programs.
Our special guests this afternoon
will be Pastor Bobby Wright and
the Laurel Hill Primitive Baptist
Church of Evergreen.
Next Sunday afternoon, our spe-
cial guests will be Pastor Keith
Johnson and the St. Luke Mission-
ary Baptist Church of Blanchard
Services will begin each Sunday at
3 p.m.. and everyone is invited to
come out and be a part of these
services. These programs are spon-
sored by our Assistant Pastor Min-
ister Scott Harrell.
We are preparing for Black His-
tory' Month in February If y ou
have any Black History trivia lliat
you would like to share with our
readers, please call tnc and I will be
glad to include it in the column
In conjunction with that, vve arc
celebrating our Annual Multicul-
tural Festival on Monday. January
19. Everyone is invited to come
out and share in these exciting
events. I'm sure they will be both
entertaining and educational
The WORD for the Week comes
from Colossians 3:17. which says.
“And whatever you do in word or
in actions, do it all in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God and the Father by him. " This
Christian life and journey that we
are living, is NOT ABOUT US!111
It's all about HIM" So lake into
careful consideration what we say
and what vve do Be sure that ALL
