Fire at Ogletree Mill results in little damage
LIVINGSTON - A fire at Ogletree
Mill Tuesday afternoon proved time
consuming for Livingston
firefighters but resulted in little
damage to the mill itself, according
to Livingston VFD Chief Corky
Cochran.
The fire was in a sawdust hopper
and also involved a box-type van
truck used to haul sawdust, which
was parked near the hopper. The
truck sustained extensive damage to
its tires and part of its wall struc-
ture, Cochran said. The fire,
reported at 1:25 p.m., was out at 2:51
p.m. Cochran said the sawdust was
tightly packed, making it difficult to
extinguish the fire. “Spot fires pop-
ped up in the main building of the
mill next to the hopper,” according
to the fire chief, but firemen were
able to extinguish the smaller fires
before they spread. He said damage
to the above-ground hopper ap-
peared to be minor.
Five trucks and 26 firefighters
from the LVFD responded to the
alarm.
The LVFD also responded to a car
fire in the 200 Block of West Denham
Street Sunday. The car, belonging to
Victor Galloway, had been left runn-
ing and some problem in the exhaust
system apparently started the blaze,
Cochran said. He described the
damage to the vehicle as minor.
Two trucks and 13 firefighters
responded to the fire, which was
reported at 2:46 p.m.
LVFD firefighters were also call-
ed Friday night to assist the
Goodrich VFD in what was reported
to be a major accident at the Trinity
River Bridge. The firemen headed
home after it was discovered there
were no injuries involved in the acci-
dent.
The department’s Jaws of Life
equipment was used at the scene of a
major accident Saturday afternoon
a t the north end of the U.S. 50 Bypass
(see related story this issue).
Firefighters also assisted EMS per-
sonnel and police at the scene.
'Be aware,' vet says
from page 1
Guest said in 1983, he took off from
his job, in observance of Veteran’s
Day and got fired for it.
On observing Veteran’s Day,
Guest said, “People need to be
aware, even if they didn’t serve, that
for veterans, that’s a day for them to
mourn the men that died, think
about things and remember.”
