agreed to construct the bridge over
Choates ( reek at an estimated cost
of $35,000 and lay the asphalt on
59 through Livingston if the city
would clear all obstructions from
the right-of-way. The city had to
also pass an ordinance providing
for parallel parking The local cost
for the laying of curb and gutter
and storm sewers would be
$35,000. The state would spend an
estimated $89,000 on the project
U S 59 would become a four-
lane highway for traffic and two
lanes for parallel parking
Mayor Ernest E Cochran, in a
town hall meeting, said, ‘The city
must agree to pay their share of the
expense on the project or be by-

mission has assured us that when

The new bridge over the Trinity
River on U.S. 59 south of
Livingston was opened in 1950
without ceremony. The cost was
$500,000 The bridge was built east
of the old one and totaled 1.811 in
length.

cates that the Livingston Cardinals
opened their baseball season in a
brand new park with a grand cere-
mony for the occasion The park
was named “Flowers Park” in
honor of Dr W W Flowers.
The new park is said to have
been equipped with one of the best
lighting systems in Texas, with 100
L 69 GE lights with 1,500-watt
bulbs. The spectator stands could
accommodate 800 persons.
Four injured in accident

section of the 200 block of East
Church Street and North Houston

A 1999 Saturn Passenger driven
by Kenneth Earl Pritchard, 29, of
Livingston, was traveling east in
the 200 block of East Church
Street, approaching the intersection
of East Church Street and North
Houston Avenue and a 1990 Chev-
rolet 15(H) pickup truck driven by
Kelvin D Johnson, 40, of Pineville,
La., was traveling west in the left
lane of East Church Street attempt-
ing to turn left onto North Houston.
According to the accident report
filed by Livingston Police Officer
Chad Ward, as Pritchard’s vehicle
entered the intersection, Johnson
initiated a left turn without yield-
ing, causing impact between the
vehicles.
Pritchard and three passengers in
his vehicle - Carla High, 27, Mat-
thew High, 4, and Marque High, 3,
all of Livingston - were transported
to Memorial Medical Center-
Livingston by Gold Star EMS with
“possible” injuries.
Pritchard was cited for expired
vehicle registration, no insurance
and unrestrained child. Johnson
was cited for failure to yield right
of way turning left
