Reynolds county, Texas; James 0., a farmer of
Blue Ridge; Rhoda, wife of J. R. Hodges, of
Ennis, Baptist minister of that place; Sarah,
wife of D. R. Hodges, of Reynolds county;
Thomas H., of Blue Ridge, Falls county;
Fannie, deceased, was the wife of Edmond Stone,
of Falls county. While not a member of any
church, Mr. Garrett was a liberal supporter of
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which
both his wives were devoted members.
Robert J. Garrett was born in Anderson
county, Texas, April 14, 1841, and in 1850
came with his parents to Falls county. He re-
mained at home until he was nineteen years of
age, when he joined a company of rangers,
under Captain R'oss, and served from October to
February. He was with Ross when he captured
Cynthia Ann Parker. On his return home, he
engaged in the stock business, at which he con-
tinued until 1861. That year he enlisted in the
Confederate service, becoming a member of
Company B, under Captain Lang, .General
Green's Regiment. He was discharged at San
Antonio on account of ill health, but re-entered
the service in the spring of 1862, this time as a
member of Adams' company, Cook's regiment.
He was in the siege of Galveston, and continued
in the service till the close of the war. In 1865
Mr. Garrett again engaged in the stock business
and continued the same for two years. He then
turned his attention to farming. A few years
later, however, he resumed the stock business in
connection with his farming operations. He lo-
cated at his present home in 1867. Mr. Gar-
rett's career has been a remarkably successful
one. Beginning life at the age of nineteen with
no financial assistance, he has worked his way
up until he is now ranked with the wealthy
farmers of Falls county. From his father's
estate he received. about $200. At this writing
he owns about 2,000 acres of land, half of which
is under cultivation. He has fifty or sixty
horses and owns an interest in about 1,000 head
of cattle. He also has an interest in a gin and
is a stockholder in the fair grounds of Tom
Green and Falls counties.Mr. Garrett's political views are in harmony
with Democratic principles. He served Falls
county for some time as Tax Collector, and as
County Commissioner in 1886-'87. Frater-
nally, he is associated with the Masonic order,
Kosse Lodge.
Mr. Garrett was married in 1863 to Miss
Mary Smith, a native of Mississippi and a
daughter of Ephraim and Edith (Smith) Smith,
natives of North Carolina. Issue from their
union is as follows: Martha Ann, wife of J. A.
Dunkum, of Marlin, Texas; Mary E., wife of
Robert Jackson, of Kosse, Texas; Frances
Luella, wifeof Dr. G. P. Reeves, of Falls county;
James T. and Gertrude, twins, the former super-
intending his father's interests in Iron county,
and the latter the wife of H. K. Hancock, of
Tom Green county, having charge of his father-
in-law's interests at that place; Dora Manerva,
a student at Huntsville; Robert L., at home;
Arrie Ruth, a student at Huntsville; Joseph
Edward, at home; Donald W., Lottie Estella,
and May Pearl, at home; Irene, who died when
young; and Rubie Myrtle, at home.
Mr. Garrett is a man whose character is above
reproach. He is a useful member of society,
and stands as well socially as financially. He
and his wife are earnest and consistent members
of the Baptist Church. For fifteen years he has
been a Deacon of the Liberty Church, and a
liberal supporter of the same.
Such is an epitome of the life of one of Falls
county's prominent men.
ENRY CLAY GHENT, M. D.-The
subject of this sketch stands to-day among
the men of whom it is said " they have
made Texas what it is." He is a native of
South Carolina, being born in Laurens district,
December 6, 1831. He came of sturdy Ger-
man and English stock, the vigor and steadi-
ness of which, with his southern environments,
has its impress visibly upon his life. His grand-
father came from Belgium to Culpeper county,4=G
