WARD DEITERMAN has been a resi-
dent of the "Lone Star State" since 1851,
but the first four years of his residence
here he made his home in Colorado county with
an uncle. He was born in the province ofWestphalia, Germany, in 1835, a son of Bernard
and Theresa (Ink) Deiterman, who owned 150
acres in their native land. The father died at
the age of ninety-seven years and the mother
when ninety-three years old.
Upon his father's farm in Germany, Edward
Deitermnan grew to manhood and until fifteen
years of. age he was an attendant of the public
schools of that country. He then embarked for
America, the ocean voyage occupying sixty days,
and after remaining with his uncle four years
(as above stated) he took a trip to New Orleans,
and then sailed tip the Mississippi and Ohio
rivers to Cincinnati, Ohio, from which place he
went to Covington, Kentucky. He remained
in the blue-grass regions of that State for two
years, after which he went to Effingham county,
Illinois, where he purchased a farm of 100
acres, which he greatly improved during the
fifteen years that he resided thereon. After
disposing of this property he came to McLennan
county, Texas, with a train of three wagons,
which county he reached at the end of six weeks,
November 11, 1873. He purchased 160 acres
of University land, which, at that time had not
been surveyed, and consequently he could not
tell where to locate his house. All the winter
he lived in his wagon near a creek that ran
through his farm, but the following summer
the land was put upon the market, and Mr.
Deiterman at once built him a cabin and com-
menced breaking the virgin soil. In 1878 he
purchased 160 acres more, for which he paid
$5 per acre, and his present fine estate of 320
acres is well improved and under fence. In
1890 he purchased 160 acres, which he deeded
to his son, and for which he paid $20 per acre.
In 1881 he erected a very substantial and
sightly dwelling-house on his premises, and
good barns for his stock and grain.
He was married, in 1861, to Miss Dena Hart-
kay, daughter of Joseph and Anna (Feldman)
Hartkay, who were native Germans and came to
America in 1820, settling in Cincinnati, where
the father followed the calling of a moulder.
Mrs. Deitermnan was born in Cincinnati in 1847,49G
