JAVEI.INAS ARE INCREASING |
Javellnas, also called Collard
Peccary, the only native North i
American wild hog are Increasing
in Texas, reports of game man-
tigers to the executive secretary
of the State Game, Fish and
Oyster Commission, idicate.
The Increase Is largely due to
the protection given this game
animal by a state law which
went into effect last year. It Is
now- unlawful to shoot Peccaries
except during the opening sea-
son of Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. It is
permissablc to kill two during a
season.
Javellnas are more common
in Southwest Texas count»»>«
They formerly ranged in far
more areas than they do now.
but killing of them for meat, for
thi ir hides and fur their bristles
threatened the extinction of
these animals.
Judging from requests for in-
formation concerning pavelinas
hunting received by the Game
Department, a large number of
hunters from other states will
invade Texas seeking Javellnas
i during the open season. Their
heads are regarded by many
sportsmen as a finer trophy than
deer heads.

FISHING BETTER
With the coming of cooler
weather, fishing is reported bel-
ter from many parts of Texas,
according to the executive sec-
retary of the Game Department.
Texas lakes and streams have
been stocked with many millions
of fish this year and much
stream and lake Improvement
work has been carried on by the
Game Department's aquatic
biologists.
Persons who put away their
fishing tackle with the coming
of cool weather are missing some
of tlu* best angling during the
year. Fishing Is generally better
over a larger portion of the day
when temperatures do not run
so high. Many ardent anglers |
put away their tackle with the
coming of hot weather and are
Just now starting to get it out
of the moth balls.
