Hi, my name is Reco. I am a boxer/black mouth cur mix.
I am 10 months to 1 year old. I am very sweet. Everyone
says I seem to get along well with other dogs. I am very
playful and I love to run. I am also kennel trained. I came
in as a stray and now I'm looking for my forever home.
Please come visit all the pets at the Joshua Animal Rescue
Shelter 100 Santa Fe St. or call 817-774-9450. We are
looking forward to meeting you.

JOSHUA STAR/COURTESY PHOTO
Two teams from Loflin Middle School competed Jan. 12 in the TCEA
Robotics Competition. This year's theme was "Molecule Mania," so the
students were challenged to a problem solving contest that introduced
and enforced chemistry concepts and chemical engineering topics. Of
the 50 teams registered, the LMS boys' team scored in the top 25
percent, and the girls' team placed first overall to advance to the TCEA
State Championships to take place in April. The LMS Robotics Club
was funded through a grant from the JISD Education Foundation.

March 22-24
Get vouchers to
dispose of
hazardous waste
Through a contract
with Fort Worth, residents
of Joshua may dispose of
household hazardous waste.
The system works through
a voucher program. Resi-
dents can obtain a voucher
from City Hall that will allow
them to dispose of house-
hold hazardous waste at the
Fort Worth Hazardous Waste
Facility, or during two an-
nual cleanup events. During
cleanup events, which take
place once in the spring and
once in the fall, the city will
host the “Crud Cruiser” that
will be located in the public
works facility, where with a
voucher you will be able to
dispose of household hazard-
ous waste.
The cost for a voucher
is $47, however the city has
budgeted to cover the first
$1,000. The first 21 residents
that apply for and are ap-
proved for a voucher will be
allowed to dispose of house-
hold hazardous waste at no
cost. Only one voucher per
household will be approved.
Additional vouchers can be
purchased for those who
need to drop off more than
once per year. The program is
being offered only to city res-
idents. Commercial vouchers
will not be available. Visit
www.cityofjoshuatx.us for
information.
Filing open for place
on city ballot
Residents with an inter-
est in filing for a place on the
City Council ballot are being
encouraged to request a can-
didate packet from City Sec-
retary Jeanne Heard at City
Hall, 101 S. Main Street.
The general election will
take place May 11, when the
mayor’s seat and Places 1 and
3 on City Council will be de-
cided.
Filing opened last week
and will continue during nor-
mal business hours and days
through March 1. The dead-
line to register for a place on
the ballot is 5 p.m. March 1.
Joe Hollarn holds the po-
sition of mayor. Gary Smith is
the Place 1 City Councilman.
Residents are being re-
minded that March is the
time to do some Spring
cleaning. The city’s annual
Spring Cleanup will take
place March 22-24, with
gates open at the city’s public
works facility from 7 a.m.-7
p.m.
Proof of residency and a
current trash bill will be re-
quired. Only one load will
be accepted and persons re-
siding outside the city may
not participate. There is a
$5 charge for the disposal of
tires and batteries. Residents
should enter the public works
facility off of 6th Street to
drop off debris.

The JOB MARKET is a regular feature of the
Burleson Star, Joshua Star, and Crowley Star.
Whenever you place an employment line ad in
the Classified section, you can duplicate
that ad here for $5 (each time it
runs, no mater how long the ad
is). The JOB MARKET gives
your employment ad additional
exposure that may be seen by
that “right” person for the job.

Requesting a
street repair
Freezing weather on the
roadways causes damage to
the road surface as a result of
“ice wedging,” when a small
crack in rock or stone is filled
with water and then freezes.
As the water freezes, it ex-
pands and causes the crack
in the rock to increase. Over
a period of time, the small
crack becomes large enough
to lead to a breakdown in the
surface of the roadway. As
the ice and snow melts and
temperatures rise, damage to
streets will become more no-
ticeable.
If you observe pot holes or
other damage to a city street,
you can report the problem
on the city website at www.
cityoijoshuatx.us. Click on
the “Citizen Service Re-
quest” link and then “Make
a Request.” That request will
be forwarded to the public
works department for sched-
uling. You can then track that
request by checking in the
“My Support Center” on the
same web page. All submit-
ted concerns are attempted
to be addressed within 24
hours.
Irrigation systems in
Residents are reminded
to shut off home irrigation
systems during freezing
weather. Many areas are hav-
ing to be treated with sand as
a result of freezing water on
the roadways from irrigation
systems, the city reports.
Prevent home fires
A few precautions can
help prevent the outbreak of
fire in your home.
Never leave your cook-
ing unattended. Always keep
your stove company, espe-
cially if you are frying food.
It’s the leading cause of
kitchen fires.
Keep it clean. Keep
stove and counter surfaces
free of clutter, grease and
especially flammable objects
like hairspray, bug spray or
air freshener.
Set a timer. A timer can
remind you to switch off the
burner or oven, saving your
food and possible your house
from being burnt.
In case of a pan fire,
control the fire by covering
the pan with a lid or a big-
ger upturned pan. Turn the
heat off. Spray the pot with a
fire extinguisher. If you don’t
have a fire extinguisher han-
dy, douse the burning oil with
baking soda. Never throw
water on the pan, it will splat-
ter the oil and spread the fire,
possibly burning you. Never
throw sugar or flour on a
grease fire.
