A demonstration testing a
new systemic chemical for the
tough-to-control loose smut in
wheat is being planted by
Proctor Capps of Salado. The
systemic fungicide being tried
is Vitavax. This seed treat
ment chemical does an excel
lent job of loose smut control.
There is also a possibility that
it will give some control of
foot rot..
A troublesome watersoak
method has been the only sys-
tem for controlling this disease
until now. The organism caus-
ing loose smut is contained un-
der the seed coat which could
not be reached by normal fung
icide seed treatment. The new
systemic fungicide which is
absorbed in the plant tissue is
a real break-through in loose
smut control.
This is the first year Vita-
vax has been cleared for ex-
perimental use by the FDA.
As a result Proctor is to have
no problems in marketing the
wheat through normal channels.
The demonstration is bi?intr
planted 2 miles east of Salado
on the Holland-Salado FM
Road. Plots are being labelled
so other small grain producers
can oDserve the trial.

Soil test results Jirn hnfrin-
ning to come in from samples

soil test week. There is still
time to send a soil sample and
to receive a report of recom-
mendations before time to ap

crops.
A soil test saved money for
Edmund Rnrnhno nf T?nvtl4
He discovered that two of his
iour neids already contained
enuugn pnospnorus for cotton
and grain sorghum production.
One field contained 110
pounds of phosphorus while
the other had 93 pounds. The
recommendation called for
50-60 pounds of nitrogen per
acre wicn no phosphorus to
produce 4000 pounds of sor-
ghum or 375 pounds of cotton
lint per acre. The soil test
saved his adding phosphorus
lerauzer to these two fields.
His other two fields required
phosphorus fertilizer. The re-
commendation asked for 50-60
pounds of nitrogen and 40-50
pounds of phosphorus for the
same level of cotton and grain
sprghum production as men-
tioned above. '
