area blaze
A Sulphur Springs fireman
was injured while fighting a
grass fire Tuesday evening
about seven miles west of the
city limits.
Fire Marshal Jerry Bolding
said that someone was burning
off a pasture near the Brashear
overpass, causing heavy smoke
on 1-30 about 6:30 p.m , when
the fire was reported by a
Department of Public Safety
trooper.
Bolding said that Fireman
David Oxford "got tangled up in
an electrical fence" which
caused a laceration to the left
thumb when the fence "just
exploded".
'• I! was dark out there and he
just didn’t see it. It’s a miracle
he wasn:t killed," Bolding said
Hospital personnel reported
that Oxford was treated and
released late Tuesday evening.
Bolding said that no estimate
was made as to how much grass
was burned. The owner of the
property reportedly was bur-
ning off the pasture. "We just
kept it from coming out to the
Interstate arid causing a bunch
of wrecks,” Bolding said.
