Got grease on wall
By Polly Cramer
POLLY'S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY — How can I remove a hair oil spot
from my living room wallpaper? That dough-like clean-
er did not do the job. — WANDA
DEAR WANDA — Spots and stains are almost impos-
sible to remove from non-washable wallpaper. Fresh
grease spots can nsnally be removed from washable
paper. Hold a clean white blotter or paper towel over
the spot and then ran a warm iron over it. As the paper
absorbs the grease move paper so a clean place is over
tbe spot. Repeat until it disappears. Do not let iron
touch tbe paper and be sure it is not too hot. — POLLY
DEAR POLLY — When I do my small child’s laundry I fold
a complete outfit together — pants, shirts and socks. I work
and am pressed for time in the mornings, so this helps. I plan
to continue this plan when Mark can dress himself. — MADE-
LINE
DEAR POLLY — My Pointer is for the many who write to
say they are having trouble with scatter rugs that have no
backing. I have several and some are reversible so I put plas-
tic under them. I open a regular plastic bag, cut it to fit and
then put under the rug. It really sticks to the floor - MRS.
E.H.
DEAR POLLY — To keep an ironing board cover on, I not
only draw elastic around the edges as you suggested but I also
put three strips of elastic across the bottom of the cover. I
make them just tight enough to hold the cover taut without
pulling it out of line.
Be careful not to put them so <!lose to the legs that they
interfere with opening and closing of the board. This method
also works great to keep a-mattress pad from slipping and
wrinkling, — MARIE

The liquid you choose to wash
down your pills can profoundly
alter the therapeutic outcome.
How many times have you
received a prescription with
instructions to “take as
needed” or “take before
meals”? Most people don’t stop
to question such vague
directions, assuming that the
medication will work no matter
what they swallow it with. But
that isn’t necessarily the case.
Some examples:
—Acidic drinks such as fruit
juice or soda pop may
chemically destroy certain
kinds of antibiotics like
penicillin, ampicillin or
erythromycin.
—Citrus fruit juices may
reduce the effectiveness of
antidepressants, an-
tihistamines or major
tranquilizers by speeding their
urinary excretion from the
body.
—If juice isn’t always a good
beverage for drugs, surely
something as innocuous as milk
would be a good choice. Right?'
Wrong. Surprisingly, milk can
interfere with a number of
different medicines.
—The laxative Ducolax
(bisacodyl) has a special
coating to insure that the drug
will dissolve slowly within the
intestines. If this medication is

taken with milk, which is
alkaline, it may dissolve
prematurely within the
stomach, lose its cathartic
action and irritate the sensitive
stomach lining.
—Milk can also block the
action of tetracycline. If a
doctor did not warn his patient
not to take this kind of an-
tibiotic within one hour of any
dairy product he might be
puzzled to hear that the in-
fection he was treating had not
disappeared.
—Even something as simple
as tea (hot or iced) could cause
problems. A woman given a

How to get
emotional help
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.

Teens: I receive many letters asking how to get profes-
sional help and whom to contact.
No surefire method exists for finding the perfect thera-
pist, but if you feel you need professional help for your
problems, these tips from Seventeen magazine will make
the search a lot easier.
— What types of therapists are available and how do they
differ?
Psychiatrists have a medical degree and usually three to
five years of postgraduate training in psychiatry. They are
qualified to prescribe drugs.
Psychologists usually have a doctoral degree from a
university certified by the American Psychological Associa-
tion. The good ones also have at least two years of
experience in therapy and are licensed In the state they
practice.
Psychiatric social workers must have had at least two
years of graduate training in programs accredited by the
Council on Social Work Education.
To be certified by the Academy of Certified Social
Workers, they must also have a master’s or Ph.D. in social
Work, two years of post-degree experience, a state license
and a passing grade on a special exam.
— How long does therapy take and how much does It cost?
Individual therapy can Involve a few sessions or several
years’ work. Groups generally run for 12 to 18 months,
meeting for about two and a half hours each week. Most
psychiatrists in private practice charge at least $50 to $60 an
hour, private psychologists run $40 to $50 an hour, and
psychiatric social workers' fees are $25 an hour and up.
Clinics, however, generally operate on a sliding-scale basis
according to Income.
— Where can I find a therapist?
You can get a referral from a local hotline (check the
Yellow Pages under “Clinics” or "Mental Health”), or a
city or county health department.

soda drinks can interfere with
the therapeutic efficlacy of
certain drugs, what’s left?
If you want to play it safe you
can almost always rely on good
old H20. Water won’t interact
with drugs or reduce then-
effectiveness.
But even though water is
usually a safe bet the amount
you drink can be crucial.
People who swallow their
tablets or capsules with one
frugal swallow may be asking
for trouble.
Bulk forming laxatives like
psyllium (Metamucil, Modane,
Syllamalt) require sufficient
liquid to work efficiently and
prevent fecal impaction. And
aspirin can be Irritating to the
stomach unless it is taken with
a full glass of water (8 ounces).
Antibiotics like amoxicillin or
erythromycin are not absorbed
well into the blood steam unless
they are taken with a large
glass of water.
Equally important Is the time
of day you down those pills.
Many drugs are totally inac-
tivated if taken at mealtime
while ohers can be dangerously
irritating to the digestive tract
unless taken with food.
So the next time your doctor
hands you a prescription with
instructions such as “take
three times a day", make sure
you know exactly how and
when to take it.
