things up realistically. Underes-
timating what's required might

mind, and everyone knows
where you stand. Today, howev-
er, you may hide your true feel-

Nursing home checklist
1
%
Daai Ann Landars: Recently
a reader sent you a list of things
to look for when selecting a
permanent home for an aging
parent. You thanked her and
printed it.
That list wasn’t half as good
as the one you ran a while back.
For heaven’s sake, girl, run
yours again! — Faithful Reader
With A Good Memory
Dear Faithful: Your memory
is better than mine. Thanks for
the reminder. I agree with you.
Here’s my list. It was compiled
by the Illinois Council for Long-
Term Care:
1. Is the home licensed? Ask.
If the answer is yes, ask to see
the license.
2. Does the administrator
have a current state license?
Again, if the answer is yes, ask
to see it.
3. Is the nursing home
Medicare and Medicaid ap-
proved?
4. What other insurance plans
are accepted?
5. Are there additional
charges for personal laundry?
Does therapy cost extra? If so,
how much?
6. Are residents allowed to
furnish their rooms with their
own furniture? Can residents
have their own radio or
television?
7. Can a husband and wife
share the same room?
8. Can residents have
alcohol? Can they smoke in
their rooms if they are able to
do so unsupervised? Are there
other convenient places where
smoking is permitted?
9. Are there restrictions ori
making or receiving phone
calls? Is a phone readily
available?
10. What are the visiting
hours? Is the resident allowed
to visit friends and relatives
outside the nursing home?
11. Where is the ‘resident's
money kept? Are there
provisions for personal banking
services? Are accurate records
kept of residents’ financial
transactions?
12. Does each resident have
his own closet and chest of
drawers?
13. What is the capacity of the
home? How many residents are
presently there?
14. Are the residents en-
couraged to leave their rooms
when able?
15. When was the last state or
local inspection? You may want
to see the most recent in-
spection report.
16. How often are fire drills
held for staff and residents?
17. What types of activities
are available to residents?
Don’t hesitate to ask to see the
schedule of activities.
18. How are residents’
medical needs met? Does the
nursing home have an
arrangement with a nearby
hospital to handle emergen-
cies?
19. Is there a dining hall or do
residents eat in their rooms?
Are special diets available for
Ann
Landers
those who need them? If not, is
there a professional dietician on
the staff available as a con-
sultant?
CONFIDENTIAL to Another
Phoenix Trying to Rise from the
Ashes: Many people spend a
lifetime together — even
raising families - but they
never communicate in any
meaningful way. Their lives run
parallel, never touching. You
had such a relationship wjth
your husband. Now that he is
gone, recognize it for what It
was, and do better — if there’s a
"next time.”
