South West Texas
Ranches Surveyed
COLLEGE STATION - South
and West Texas cattlemen seek-
ing to expand their herds aro
looking less for greener grass
in neighboring rangelands and
concentrating more on improv-
ing their own.
"The region has reached a
point where the land is support-
ing nearly all the cattle
it can" explained Calvin C.
Boykin a researcher with the
U.S. Department of Agriculture
at Texas AMI University.
"Ranchers will have to apply
some range improvement tech-
niques if they want to raise
more cattle to take advantage of
the current high in cattle pri-
ces" he advised.
In a special project for the
Texas Agricultural Experiment
Station Boykin analyzed the ec-
onomics of typical medium-
sized livestock ranches in eight
counties in South and Far West
Texas.
He found herd sizes had gen-
erally increased rapidly over
the past few years primarily
because operators were sowing
grass in wornout croplands.
As the price of cattle increas-
ed so did return on investment.
Between 1967 and 1970 opera-
tors in most ranches surveyed
had boosted returns between 80
cents and ?1.77 for every ?100
invested.
Still Boykin pointed out no
cattlemen in the surveyed region
are getting rich. The highest in
vestment return registered by
any ranch in the survey was that
of a 1600(Kicrc operation in
Presidio County which made
$4.85 for every $100 invested.
In the rest of the region ranch-
es surveyed returned between
$2.27 and $4.18 for every $100
their owners invested.
In a business in which com-
fortable returns generally begin
at seven per cent Boykin obser
ved that most ranches in the
area studied would probably do
better by leaving their money in
savings accounts.

group discussing Texas Farm
and Ranch Safety Week July
25-31 said today that acciden
tal deaths took tho lives of 203
persons in 1971 in rural areas
of the state.
"One of tho most surprising
factors in last year's accidental
deaths is the large number of
persons who were killed by fires
explosions and bums" said
Smetana.
The TSA Vice President said
thirty-five deaths were deaths
were recorded which were a re
sult of fires explosions or bums.
Th safety group spokesman said
the figures point up the need for
farm and ranch families to pro
vide adeouate nrotection ncrain-
st the dangers of fire.
Other leading causes of ac-
cidental death last year on Tex-
as farms and ranches included
29 drownings 28 accidental
shootings 26 machinery acci-
dents 22 tractor accidents 22"
falls and 17 accidents involving
mnimals.
"These figures on accidental
deaths in rural areas of tho;
state during 1971 show a con-
tinuing upward trend of deaths-
in nearly every category" said.
Smetana.
