READ SONG Of SOLOMON 5:9 16
JUNE 15 —THURSDAY
“FRIEND WIFE”
This is my beloved, and this is my friend.
— Song of Solomon 5:16
For many years V. Raymond Edman was the beloved
president of Wheaton College. Often in chapel he
would refer to his wife as “Friend Wife." Alumnus
David Burnham recalls how “antique" this phrase
sounded. Today, however, he says of his own wife Sue,
“She is indeed my best friend."
Yesterday’s devotional noted that the Song of
Solomon sets forth sexual intimacy in marriage as
enriching when celebrated as a gift from God. But sig-
nificant as this is. K is not the “magic’ bond that holds
two people together. Commitment to Christ in mar-
riage can make K a lifelong friendship.
Christ gives an inner security to each person so that
a friendship can grow. Friends share events of fife that
shape character. This mutual friendship with Christ
binds us to our mate and allows us to share in life-
shaping events. How beautiful to see a man and a.
woman being drawn together when injury, accident, ill
health, or other circumstances put great stress on the
relationship. Friendship embraces one's mate with
understanding, faith, love, tw.idemess. honesty, and
support. People grow in faith and love.
Don't look for faults In your marriage Instead, share
of yourself and make sure your mate is your best
friend. — DJ.D
