Carbon monoxide gas:
special winter hazard
By LOU IVY JOHNSON
D County Extension Agent
J)id You Know That
7 More than 10,000 persons
nation-wide are poisoned by
carbon monoxide, but recover.
Jjome, however, may suffer
temporary or permanent
damage to the brain with
serious disturbances of vision,
pearing, speech and memory.
r While carbon monoxide
poisioning may occur year-
round, the most hazardous time
is during cold months when
pome, cars and businesses are
Closed tightly against the
feather. The leading con-
tributors to carbon monoxide
poisoning are space heaters,
Cange ovens, floor surfaces and
Automobiles.
, Self contained units which
have stoves and heaters using
liquified petroleum gas should
be checked for leaks.
All heaters and furnaces
should be vented to the outside.
If not, a fresh air source from
the outside through a window or
door is advised.
If you are in a tightly-closed
room or building with a carbon
monoxide source, be alert for
such poisoning signs as
yawning, headache, nausea,
dizziness, ringing in the ears,
and abdominal pain. If such
symptoms occur, get some
fresh air immediately, this
alertness could save your life
and the lives of others.
Stress
Any "attack” on the body can
cause stress ... but excessive
stress usually is avoidable. An
"attack” may be a disease,
injury or emotional crises.
To help prevent excessive
stress, one must understand his
individual reaction and know
his limits.
Health Problems
Consumers “eat smart” to
alleviate existing health
problems or to avoid potential
ones. Health problems listed as
concerns included: overweight,
high blood pressure (hyper-
tension) allergies, heart
disease, kidney problems and
diabetes.
Diet Changes
Consumers reporting diet
changes were avoiding such
foods as sweets arod snacks:
Fried foods. Fatty red meat,
ice cream, and soft drinks.
Leading additions to diets
were low-fat milk and clieese,
lean red meat, fish, fresh fruits
and vegetables, poultry and
broiled and baked foods.
Read Labels
In order to learn what to
include and what to leave out of
the diet, consumers are reading
labels more closely as their
main means of determining
whether or not a product
contains whatever they should
add or delete from their diet.
Many respondents said they
read labels in attempting to
prevent potential health
problems.
