Eagles Fly Over
Vernon East
The Holliday PeeWee Eagles shut out
Vernon East 10-0 while Holliday Mid-
get Eagles win 22-14 in sudden death.
Holliday found itself starting the game
on defense with Clay Montgomery,
Manuel Saldivan and Zachary Berend
stopping the first drive vertually in its
tracks. The Eagles take over on their
own 49 yard line to see the mini drive
stall by a fumble in Vernon territory at
the 32 yard line. Vernon could not move
the ball up the field and the Eagles
started the second quarter with the ball at
the 28 yard line. Holliday found trouble
in the air as Vernon intercepted the
Eagle pass at the 12. Vernon hurt their
own cause as a bad snap and then a
penalty put them back to their own three
yard line. On third down Eagle defender
Zachary Berend found Vernon back in
the end zone and rewarded the Eagles
with two points off the safety. Time then
ran out of the half.
In the second half, the Eagles drove the
ball down the field to the 32 yard line
only to fumble to Vernon. The Eagles
held Vernon to four downs and took
over at the Lions 39-yard line. The
Eagles tailback, Ryan Looper, made 33
yards on three carries before quarter-
back Blake Carruthers rolled around his
right end for the six yard touchdown.
The two point conversion was carried
over by fullback Zachary Berend.
Hollidays defense then put in their
claws and stopped Vernon in 4 downs to
let the offense have a turn only to let the
ball go back to Vernon on downs. Ver-
nons first down pass was then inter-
cepted by Eagle Matt Peters. Eagles kept
the ball and drove to the 12 yard line
before time expired in the game making
the final score 10-0. Defensively for the
Eagles, Berend and Looper had an out-
standing game, according to Coach
Blake.
The Holliday Midget Eagles return to
the win column with an overtime victory
over Vernon East at home on Saturday.
Holliday saw themselves down by 14
when Vernon’s second kickoff was
picked up by Derrick Watson and re-
turned 55 yards for Holliday’s first TD of
the night. The two point conversion was
good by Cody Leggett. The Eagles
Blake Morrison crossed the goal line
earlier in the half only to have a clip call
the play back. Time ran out in the first
half with Holliday trailing Vernon 8-14.
The Eagle defense was the key in the
second half not allowing Vernon inside
the Eagle 20. Both teams had three
chances to score before Holliday's Mi-
chael Gill fell on a Vernon fumble at
their 10 yard line. Leggett then scores up
the middle from 10 yards out. The extra
point attempt failed. Neither team could
cross the goal line before the final horn
sounded.
Holliday received the kick to break the
tie and used 4:52 off the clock to com-
plete the drive. Blake Morrison kept the
ball around the left end for th TD. An
elated Eagle Coach Scott Belcher,
cleared the sidelines and "led" the team
to the "hugging celebration" in the End
Zone only to be "flagged" by the official
for excessive celebration. Leggett ran
the ball for the extra 2 point conversion.
Holliday had 255 yards on the ground,
20 by air to beat Vernon 22-14.
The PeeWees and Midgets are prepar-
ing for this Saturday’s game at Wildcat
field with Archer City, starting at 6 p.m.
