Windthorst 4-H
Club Holds Meeting
The Windthorst 4-H Club held its
monthly meeting on Wednesday, April
19th in the school cafeteria. There were
eleven members present. Business dis-
cussed was that the 4-H would pay for
the clay pigeons used at the practices at
Mike Schreiber‘s. Also discussed was
that there will be a meeting at the Archer
Activity Center on April 27, at 7:30p.m.
regarding the upcoming 4-H camp that
is to be held. Bill Ed Crowley, Boy
ScoutLeader will be talking on the camp
and going over the mles and activities
and other details about the campout.
Parents and 4-H members who are plan-
ning on going to the camp are encour-
aged to attend this meeting.
Kathryn Carnes, Archer County Ex-
tension Agent, was present to discuss
projects that are available to do at shows
for members. Project entry forms were
passed out and the forms need to be
filled out and returned by the next meet-
ing
Frost in April?
Well, it’s 1995 and we’re in Texas, so,
why should we be surprised!?
Many people reported a significant
frost Monday morning. Temperatures
dipped into the low to mid 30’s across
much of Texhoma, with record lows
officially reported at Wichita Falls and
Lawton. I hope the damage won ’ t be too
severe, but it sure couldn’t have helped
anything.
I don’t see any real warm weather
coming for the next several days. Yes,
daytime temperatures will be in the 70’s
and low 80’s, but that is normal for this
time of year. There may still be a few
days with temperatures below normal.
Another strong spring storm system
will likely affect Texas and Oklahoma
this next weekend, bringing a renewed
threat of severe weather. This one looks
wet, so maybe we can all receive some
beneficial rains this time, not just a few
of us. Actually, it is still bone dry west
of here, towards Guthrie and Paducah.
Some counties in the Texas Panhandle
are reporting their driest conditions
since 1956.
Last Saturday’s barrage of storms was
truly remarkable in that on the ground,
temperatures were in the 40’s. One con-
firmed tornado touched down five miles
SSE of Electra, with hail covering the
ground 2 to 4 inches deep near Grayback.
and in NE Archer County. Although it
was cold at the surface that day, the
temperature was near 70 a few thousand
feet up, and the atmosphere was quite
unstable, so strong to severe storms
were still able to develop! The same sort
of strange weather occured last year
when a gustnado was reported near
S.A.F.B. when it was 39 degrees out-
side!
