Igor Gouzenko
Says Red Agents
Operate in US
Washington, Dec. 28 Ut— The......
Russian who- broke the 1946 Can-
adian spy case, Igor Gouzenko,
thinks there may be hundreds of
Red agents operating in the United
States. And he suggests that
Washington make it worth while
for some of them to quit the Reds
and hand over their spy docu-
ment®. •.»-
Gouzehko expresses these views
in a copyrighted interview with
the "magazine U. S. News And
World Report.
The U. S. Senate jlnternal Se-
curity Sub-committee is now ar-
ranging to interview Gouzenko in
secret, in its investigation of al-
leged subversion jp the U. S. gov-
ernment.
In the magazine interview Gou-
lenko was asked to estimate the
number of Soviet agents working
in the U. S. now. He replied — "I
think it might run into hqndreds.”
And he added that they spend,
.several million- : dollars in tele-
grams alone.
The former Soviet embassy
clerk was asked to give* his ap-
praisal of the work done by Seq*
tor Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin,
chairman of the Senate Investiga-
tions Sub-committee. Gouzenko re--
plied that hg thought McCarthy
is. doing a giod.job, but that he
could do even better if he had
documentary evidence..^ 4
