Where she picked uji this no-|
lion is hard to say, because in i
those days no woman in her right :
mind was supposed even to con-:

met a Quaker doctor in Philadel- ,
[ihia who was sympathetic to hot ;
idea. In fact Ur. John Warrington
helped her. The law required that
a medical student study three
years with a physician before tak-
ing advanced work. After her ap-
pi enticeship with the Quaker,
Elizabeth had another problem..
Where could she study?
She applied to seventeen medi-j
cal schools. Each promptly refus-
ed her. Di Warington suggested
that she go to Paris and enter
medieal school disguised as a man..
The masquei ade was unnecess- t
hi y because eventually she was
accepted by the medical depart-
ment at Cioneva College in Ue-
ih'U, New York.
Most historians (relieve that the
school really wanted to reject
Elizabeth, but was afraid to of-1
