RALPH RASH ™
ATTORNEY-AT-LAW
' * , Stirling Building
Phene 1627
By H. A. SCHENDORF
Washington, Apr. 25 (tfl—For
the past 5 years, 25 expert* have
been studiyng the economy of the
nation, Their objective, to answer
two vital questions:
Where do we stand?
Where are wc going?
If f 3rd question were to he
added, it would be: what do we
need to guarantee a bright fu-
ture?
That study was made by the
Twentieth Century Fund of Nbw
York, a non-profit, non-partisan
research foundation that was
founded in 1919, and endowed by
the late Edward A. Filene.
The results of that study, just
made public in a book called
“America’s Needs and Resources:
A New Study”, show America as
the most favored nation ever to
exist on this earth.'
Consider this:
The United States has a little
more than 6 per cent of the pop-
ulation of the world. It has less
than 7 per cent of all the land in
the world.
Nevertheless, its produces and
consumes more than one-third of
all the goods and services pro-
duced in the entire world.
Put another way, that means
that each American has about five
times his nroportionate share of
such things as refrigerators,
aqtpmpbilcs, frozen foods, medical
services and housing. .
Actually, howevev, he probably
has more than that. For, were we
to consider only goods produced
in factories—things like refriger-
tors and automobiles—the picture
looks like this:
With only 6 per cent of the
people, the United States con-
sumes 50 per cent of all the
goods produced in factories.
The capitalist system of the
United States is being challenged
by various other economic systems.
Russia says Communist is best.
Germany in the 1930’s tried state
socialism. England, uider the La-
bar Party, tried a kind of social-
ism.
But the real proof is in the Tb-
sults obtained.
And here is what the Twentieth
Century Fund reports:
“The aggregate real income of
the more than 160 million Ameri-
cans today probably exceeds the
combined income of the 600 mil-
lion people living in Europe and
Russia, and far surpasses the total
income of the more than one bil-
lion inhabitants of Asia.”
However, in this unparalled
prosperity, this is still a challenge.
What is true of the majority,
the Twentieth Century Fund- re-
ports, is not true of every Ameri-
can. Although the average Ameri-
can lives better, eats better and
has more and better recreation
than any other human on earth,
some Americans are below aver-
age.
There are, tne report says, still
many Americans who have sub-
standard housing, inadequate
clothing, insufficient food, school-
ing, medical care and other basic
requirements.
But the report is promising. It
wouldn’t-tgk*-much more to guar-
antee every American a satisfac-
tory minimum of the things need-*
ed for health and decency.
■ The economic future depends
on many things which are difficult
if not impossible to predict. A
war, for instance, upsets all
peacetime forecasts.
However, the Twentieth Cen-
tury Fund estimates^ that in just
5 years—by the year 1960—we
may be producing 490 billion dol-
lars worth of goods and services.
And it wouio take an increase
of only 7 per cent beyond 1950
production to guarantee every
American a satisfactory minimum
for a happy and useful life.

icine in Kaufman 'County for 54

ducted as he traveled by horse in
