The Hoover Company
Washington, Mar, 26 Ufl -
Deliveries under government
contracts in effect the first
quarter of the yeaf are expect-
ed to add an additional 229
million dollars worth of largely
unneeded items to the nation’s
top-heavy stock of strategic
materials.
Senators who have been
shown partly declassified docu-
ments estimate that first quar-
ter deliveries will cost taxpay-
ers eight and a half million
dollars more than current
market prices of the 35 materi-
als on the lists.
President Kennedy has or-
dered a halt on many items.
But, due to contracts negotiat-
ed before he took office, the
surplus of other materials is
growing. On order this quarter
is 101,000 tons of aluminum,
at about $480 a ton to add to a
stockpile now 169 per cent of
requij ements. Other on-order
items — now stockpiled in ex-
cess of needs — include chro-
mite, cobalt, copper, lead, man-
ganese, molybdenum, nickel,
rubber, tungsten and zinc.
Lead is stockpiled at 484 per
cent of requirements, cobalt
576 per cent, tungsten 324 per
cent and zinc 888 per cent. The
other stockpiled metals listed
range from 114 to 197 per cent
of requirements.

Striking Pinch
Becomes Acute
San Francisco, Mar. 26 Ufl—
The pinch of the West Coast
(shipping strike tightened on
Hawaii today. In San Francisco
there was no sign of settle-
ment in the ten day old tie-up.
Officials of 13 major hotels
along Honolulu’s tourist center
of Waikiki Beach reported
drops of five to 25 per cent in
occupancy since the strike be-
gan.
Hawaii grocers reported they
are running out of staples such
as rice and canned milk.
The supply got a slight boost
when the container ship Ha-
waiian Refiner docked to un-
load perishables under an
agreement reached earlier in
San Francisco federal court.
But the arrival won’t go far
toward filling the needs of
Hawaii's 632,000 population.
After the perishables are un-
loaded, the Refiner becomes
strikebound in Honolulu.
Leaping Flames
Destroy Church
Dallas, Mar. 26 (#1—Leaping

church in the east edge of
downtown Dallas early this

For a time several homes
were threatened.

out after midnight and swept
through the Good Will Chris-
tian Church, Dallas firemen re-
ported it confined to the church

Vitamins Won't
Grow Hair
Washington, Mar. 26 —
The Federal Food and Drug
Administration has come out
with a solemn pronouncement
that vitamins won’t grow hair
on a bald head. The observa-
tion came with the announce-
ment of the seizure of more
than 760,000 vitamin capsules
that the agency claimed had
been falsely advertised as good
for growing hair.

Austin, Mar. 26 UB — A six-
time socialist candidate for
president, Norman Thomas,
•said yesterday in Austin that
the current campaign for more
fallout shelters actually makes
war more likely.
Thomas is chairman of the
national organization known as
“Turn Toward Peace.” He
spoke at a day-long “picnic for
peace” in an Austin city park.
Several hundred persons at-
tended the picnic and a series
of speeches and panel discus-
sions which were sponsored by
an Austin organization known
as “Austin for Peaceful Alter-
natives."
Although there had been pre-
vious protests to the city coun-
cil over use of the city park by
the organization, there were no
demonstrations. -
Thomas said, “I think the
hysterical campaign for shel-
ters tends to make war more
likely.” He continued, “It also
invites the Russians to emula-
tion.”
Thomas said a full shelter
program also would “give us
the excuse not to spend money
for other things, like schools.”
He said, “We could always
claim we had the safest holes
in the ground.”
TEPEE TESTIMONY
Phoenix, Ariz. — Joe
Sandera, a member of the
Arizona Indian Association,
testified at a U. S. Civil
Rights 'Commission hearing—
“Speaking from an Indian
point Of. view,” he said, “I hope
you don’t louse 'up your, immi-
gration policies as badly is we
did.”

Dallas, Mar. 26 W—Police
hold little hope of returning
to the city two Louisiana es-
capees that were captured over
the weekend in Lancaster, N. Y.
They had paintings and a car
stolen from the home of 76-
year-old Mrs. K. K. Meisenbach
of Dallas.
Captured by New York state
police were 23-year-old Richard
Racquier of New Orleans and
22-year-old Christopher Thomp-

They were driving Mrs. Meis-

New York state police told
Captain Walter Fannin of the
Dallas pofice they hoped to try
the men there before returning
