London, Dec. 13 Ufi — Any
theory that the Soviet Union
now builds better planes than
the West was challenged last
night by the British publica-
tion “Jane’s All the World’s
Aircraft,” guide book on world
aviation.
The preface to Jane’s 1961-
62 edition recalls the gasps of
awe that went up after the
spectacular Moscow fly-past on
Soviet aviation day last July
that gave the West a first
glimpse of many new Russian
aircraft. Jane’s says:
“What must be remembered
is that the Russians had not
displayed their aviation might
in this way for five years.”
The writer suggests that if
Britain abolished its own an-
nual air displays for five years
and then unveiled all its new
planes “the effect could have
been equally startling.” He
adds:

E. R. GIBSON „
Vandenberg, AFB, Cal., Dec.
13 (43 — A ten-pound robot
named Oscar has been shot into
erbit aboard a Discoverer Sat-
ellite from the Vandenberg Air
Force Base in California. It
has begun beeping “Hi” to the
world’s 300,000 radio amateurs.
In addition to Oscar, the sec-
ond stage of the rocket carried
the usual Discoverer cargo —
a capsule of secret instruments.
The capsule is to be ejected
within the next few days and
parachute down near Hawaii.
Planes will try to snag it in
the air — something that has
been achieved seven times to
date. Three other capsules were
recovered from the ocean.
About an hour and a - half
after the launch, the Air Forco
said Oscar was transmitting
signals. Plans call for Qscar to
broadcast continually the four
dots and two dots that spell
“Hi” in Morse code.
All the world’s amateur
radio operators have been in-
vited to help track Oscar. Its
message — “Hi” — is being
broadcast on the international
amateur frequency of 145 meg-
acycles, which can be receiv-
ed by comparatively simple
short wave equipment.
dence to suggest that men or
airplanes are superior to their
Western counterparts.”
For the first time, Jane’s
formally admits spaceships into
its family of flying machines.
The new edition carries a spe-
cial section entitled “Guided
Miscles and Space Vehicles.”
Last year this section, was for
guided missiles only. ‘
Noting Russia’s two orbital
space flights and the two Amer-
ican sub-orbital ventures since
its last edition, Jane’s says ex-
traterrestial travel so far “is
the only form of transport with
a 100 per cent safety record.’
The yearbook’s 521 pages
catalogues just about every
kind of machine that leaves the
ground. Its big gaps relate
mostly to Russian vehicles. The
presface stresses that the book
lists only known facts and
docs not concern itself with in-
complete reports. There is al-
most no information on the big
Russian intercontinental and
intermediate range missiles,
though the smaller tactical
rockets are dealt with in some
detail.
Another sign of the times is
the shrinkage of the section de-
voted to airships. With the dis-
appearance of the U.S. Navy’s
lighter-than-air squadrons, air-
ships take up only two pages.

Czechs Recall
Ambassador
To Albania
Prague, Dec. 13 (At — Com-
munist Czechoslovakia has call-
ed home its ambassador to Rod
Albania and has announced the
Albanian ambassador must
leave Czechoslovakia. Radio
Prague reports this. The action
is short of a diplomatic break.
The Czechs say diplomatic re-
lations will be maintained at a
lower level. A Czech charge d’-
affaires is being left in the
Albanian capital to represent
both Czech and Soviet inter-
ests.
Czechoslovakia claims the Al-
banian embassy in Prague or-
ganized numerous provocations
incompatible with the activities
of a diplomatic mission. And
the Czechs say full responsibil-
ity for this must be done by
the Albanian ambassador.
The government says recall
of the Czechoslovak ambassador
in Albania had teen ordered as
a result of measures taken
against him ly Albanian
Dallas, Dee. 13 (4) — An en-
thusiastic crowd cheered and
shouted approval last night
when Edward A. Walker said
he quit the army because he
could no longer “be a collabor-
ator with the release of United
States sovereignty to the Unit-
ed Nations.”
The 51-year-old Texan was
interrupted by applause num-
erous times during his more
than hour-long speech in the
Dallas Memorial Auditorium at
a rally billed as “Texans Wel-
come General Walker.”
At many points the crowd
rose to its feet for the former
major general and cheered his
denunciation of . United States
foreign policy, former nation-
al leaders, and Communists.
Many in the crowd waved
American flags.
Presiding at the rally was,
former Texas Governor Coke
Stevenson, ■ long-time leader
of conservation forces in the
state.
Auditorium engineer Burt
Youngblood estimated the
crowd at 5,600 persons.
Heaviest applause came when
mentionel General Douglas
MacArthur, the late Sen. Joseph
McCarthy and Senator Strom
Thurmond and recommended
the motion picture “Operation
Abolition.”
The crowd gave long stand-
ing Ovations in the flag-decked
hall when Walker appeared on
the stage and at the end of
his talk.
They booed loudly when
Walker mentioned Adlai Ste-
venson, the United Nations,
Senator William, Fullbright of
Arkansas, and what Walker
called “moderate patriots" con-
trasted with what he called
“super-patriots.”
Walker hit hard at what he
termed “censorship” of U.S.
military leaders, “subversion
national interest by one-world-
ers,” and State Department
foreign policy during the past
16 years,
“Under censorship our pol-
icy seems to verge on insanity.
No woiider Tshombo has not
accused us of having Commun-
hits in our government. What
other explanation is there?”
Walker said as the crowd stood
and cheered.
