rapidly recognizing the fact that the Hu-
mane society Is hero to stay
Tho secretary Mr It Ilruco Wood read
his report up to date showing that twclvo
convictions had been secured ngalnst par-
tita for cruelty to nnlmals and that four
children had been rcscuod from the cruel
treatment of parents and others with vvhom
they resided Ho stated that many ob-
stacles wcro thrown In his way by persons
making reports to him of acts of cruelty
to children and who objected to be known
In tho matter and also refused to allow
their names to bo presented as witnesses
Ho had investigated several such cases and
was unable to bring tho parties to Justlco
solely on account of parties refusing to be
known in tho case anil who wont so far
as even to positively state that they would
not glvo evldcnco It called upon thus for-
getting that without evidence tnis society
was helpless to prosecute tho good work
for which It was organized On the other
band several Indies stated that they iwo
ready and willing to go before any Judge
and piovo the acts complained of Hj
bad had correspondence with thu Humano
societies of Port Worth and Austin and as-
a result found that the good work already
accomplished by the Houston roclcty ex
cwiled that cf tho two mentioned Thu
Houston society had obtained mil llelpal
recognition and secured nn ordinance whio
