Lucas Burrow, local teen,
killed in one vehicle accident
Lucas Tate Burrow, age
17 of Scroggins, was killed
in a one vehicle accident
on Franklin County Road
SE4350 Wednesday, May
30. Fie was the son of Cheryl
Burrow and Keith Burrow.
■‘...the trooper that found
the accident found that there
had been a missed incom-
ing call on his cellphone and
there is speculation that his
phone was ringing and he
was possibly trying to an-
swer his phone when control
was lost,” said his father,
Keith Burrow, in a Face-
book post.
The young man was driv-
ing a 1997 Chrysler LFIS
north on the county road
around 7:20 p.m. Wednes-
day, when the car drifted
off the roadway and struck
a chain link fence at the
Bethel Cemetery. The ve-
hicle traveled a short dis-
tance, crossing the roadway
again before coming to rest
wedged in a grove of trees
on the west side of the coun-
ty road about .2 mile north
of FM 1448.
The youth was pro-
nounced dead at the scene
about 8:15 p.m. by Franklin
County Justice of the Peace
Jim Alford. According to
DPS reports, the boy was
wearing his seat belt.
Judge Alford stated that as
is customary in a fatality, the
body was sent for autopsy.
He noted that it was clear
the death was from injuries
caused when a portion of
the fence came through the
window of the vehicle.
”'...Lucas wasn’t tex-
ting per-se’ ....However,
cellphone distraction may
have been the cause of his
untimely demise and it re-
mains urgently important
that we give driving our full
and undivided attention and
pay proper respect to the po-
tential for distraction that is
inherent with mobile-phones
while driving,” concluded
Mr. Burrow.
A fund was established
by family friends with First
National Bank of Mount Ver-
non to assist the family with
his burial and related expens-
es. The account is listed as
the Lucas Burrow Memorial
Fund. His grandparents, Fran-
ces and James Burrow, will
oversee the fund.
Funeral services for Lucas
Burrow were Sunday, June 3.
See his obituary on page 7A of
this issue for details.
The teen was the first traffic
fatality in Franklin County in
2012. The last fatality accident
in the county was Aug. 8,2011
near the east bound 150 mile
marker on 1-30. Michael An-
