Men of Courage Car Show at
First Baptist Church Saturday

Optic-Herald Staff
The Men of Courage Car
Show will be on Saturday,
April 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
in the parking lot at the First
Baptist Church.
There will be 12 differ-
ent classifications for the car
show with an entry fee of $25
per vehicle, which should be
paid the morning of the event.
If there are not at least three
vehicles to form a category,
then those entries will be
moved to the “open” division.
Robbie Collvins will serve
as judge for the show. He
is a car enthusiast and he
worked to fully restore a 1934
Chevy, which was a nine year
journey. His vehicle won the
Mayor's Choice Award at the
2011 CountryFest Car Show.
A People's Choice award
will be presented during the
award ceremony at 2 p.m.
There will also be a 50/50
drawing.
A free hot dog lunch will
be served to the first 400.
A concession stand will be
available, and drawings and
door prizes will be conducted
throughout the day.
Live music will fill the air
at the event.
Members of the FBC youth
group praise band will perform
at 11 a.m.. The group leads
the music every Wednesday
night in the church's Harbor.
Members of the group include
Daniel Hassell, lead guitar
and vocals; Dylan Blair, elec-
tric piano and vocals; Gilbert
Dale, drums and vocals, Caleb
Hassell, bass guitar and vo-
cals; Rae Asay, electric guitar
and vocals, and Tanner Guth,
rhythm guitar.
The band from the Sulphur
River Cowboy Church is also
set to perform beginning at
noon. Singing vocals and
playing rhythm guitar will be
Steve Ellis and Danny Fran-
cis. Ronny Burns will play
lead guitar and Ike Roach,
will be on the bass guitar.
Also on guitar and vocals will
be Warren Carter and Aaron
Parker, and Riley Roach will
play the drums.
The church is located at
319 S. Kaufman St., just two
blocks south of downtown
Mount Vernon. Proceeds
from the event will support
the Men's Ministry activites
at the church.

Concert to honor volunteers,
raise funds for association

A live concert has been
planned in the Hill Building
on the south side of the square
from 7-10 p.m. Saturday,
April 12.
Tickets are $10 in advance
or $15 at the door the night
of the performance. Advance
tickets are available from the
Saturday
Hicks Law Office, Franklin
County Historical Association
Headquarters at the Parchman
house, and from the offices
of the Mount Vernon Optic-
Herald.
Featured entertainment
will be Tamara and the Lost
Tomorrows Band and a hus-
band wife duo, The Mitchells.
Tamara is a young virtuoso
violinist from the Republic of

handing out information about
the organization.
No fewer than 10 booths,
in addition to the Farmers
Market vendors, and eight
special events are planned in
the downtown area Saturday.
Joe Kuhl will be offering
his “Black and Blue Barbe-
cue.” Pat Barton will offer
snow cones, and there will
be coffee from The Coffee
Shoppe from Lake Cypress
Springs.
Adoptable companions
from the Mount Vernon Ani-
mal Shelter will be on the
plaza. There will also be
handmade wreaths by Tina
Jaggers, and Happy Crafter
Audrey Norman and Gallery
41 will have those one of a
kind items that make great
gifts.
There is no fee for a booth,
however, there is a $ 10 charge
each for water and/or electric-
ity if needed. Vendors may
begin setting up their booth
areas at 7:30 a.m. and should
be ready to open by 9 a.m.
Vendors are asked to keep
their booths open until 3 p.m.
The downtown special
events for the day include a
5K Color Bunny Run with
registration at 7 a.m., Farmers
Market from 8 a.m. until sold
out, a Car Show at the First
Baptist Church with registra-
tion at 9 a.m., the Key Club
Bake-off with registration at
8:30 a.m., PlazaZumba on the
east side of the plaza at noon,
A Night in the Museum 5-7
p.m. and Jammin' at the Hill
Building, 7-10 p.m. Separate

Annual Key Club Bake-off
and auction set at arts center

The 11th annual Spring
Bake-Off and Auction,
sponsored by the Key Club,
will be Saturday, April 12
at the Cultural Arts Center.
Items must be delivered
to the CAC between 8:30
and 9 a.m. Judging will
begin at 10 a.m.
Participants must pro-
duce two (duplicates) of
each item entered. One
of the items will be cut
for judging and sampling.
The duplicate entry will be
auctioned or sold for profit.
Samples of the entries
will be available starting at
9:30 a.m. Sweet lovers are
encouraged to stop by and
purchase a sampler plate
of items.
Winners will be announced
at 11 a.m. Winning cooks are
asked to be available at that
time for photos. An auction
of the top entries will begin at
11:10 a.m.
Sponsor forms for busi-
nesses and individual buyers
are available at First National
Bank, Guaranty Bond Bank,
and from the Key Club web-
site at www.mvkeyclub.com.
Net proceeds from this
year's auction will go to the
NETO home delivered meals
program.
There will be two winners
in both pies and cakes catego-
ries, first and second place.
Winners will receive $50 for
first place and $25 for second
place.

to learn jazz, country and folk
music.
“Most folks who have
heard her perform agree, she
has learned all those styles
and more,” stated B. F. Hicks,
president of the Franklin
County Historical Associa-
tion, which is sponsoring the
event.
Tamara will be joined for
the event by four other Texas
musicians, The Lost Tomor-
rows. Together they will pro-
vide an eclectic mix of folk,
jazz and classical, one of
which is sure to please all at-
tending. Also joining in will
be the Dallas based duo, The
Mitchells. The couple perform
vocalizations and solos with
a southern jazz “bluesy” un-
dertone.
The event will serve to
honor the volunteers of the
Franklin County Historical
Association as well as a gener-
al fund raising event. Refresh-
ments and food will be served.
