STRUCTURE FIRE
Fire destroys broiler house

Fire destroyed a broiler
house at the Quoc Nguyen
farm on Joyce Lane, off FM
3007 in the Scroggins Com-
munity Tuesday, April 1.
The fire was reported by a
passer-by shortly before 7 a.m.
The structure was in flames
when the first unit arrived, just
11 minutes later. The structure
was located near the south
end of a series of eight broiler
houses at the site.
There were no birds in the
house at the time of the fire.
Firefighters worked diligently
to protect the other houses
from the flames.
Units from South Franklin,
Mount Vernon, and North
Franklin volunteer fire depart-
ments responded to the call. In
addition, East Texas Medical
Center's Emergency Services,
Franklin County Sheriff's
Department and Fire Marshal
Robert Zinn were on site.
According to Fire Marshal
Robert Zinn, the structure was
a total loss. His investigation
is continuing into the cause
of the fire.

Fourteen cases disposed of
in county court in March

Thirteen individuals in
14 cases were sentenced
by Franklin County Judge
Paul Lovier in March 2014.
Charges were dismissed in
five cases, and one individual
was granted deferred adjudi-
cation.
Christie Rene Joslin pled
guilty to a charge of issuance
of a bad check. She was or-
dered to pay a $100 fine and
$227.14 in restitution.
Terrell Lee Coleman pled
guilty to a charge of failure
to identify as a fugitive with
intent to give false informa-
tion. He was sentenced to 123
days in jail.
Javier Trejo Hernandez
pled guilty to a charge of
DWI. He was sentenced to 90
days in jail. The sentence was
suspended, and he was placed
on probation for 180 days. He
was ordered to pay a $750 fine.
Katie Michael Hohbein
was granted deferred adjudi-
cation after she pled guilty to
a charge of possession of less
than two ounces of marijuana.
She was placed on probation
for six months and ordered to
pay a $500 fine.
A charge of cruelty to live-
stock animals was dismissed
against Amber Gail Umbaugh
in the interest of justice.
Charles Michael Wester
pled guilty to a charge of DWI.
He was sentenced to 90 days
in jail. The sentence was sus-
pended, and he was placed on
probation for one year. He was
ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.
Saaed Musa Aqel pled
guilty to a charge of assault
causing bodily injury/family
violence. He was sentenced
to 35 days in jail and ordered
to pay a $1,000 fine.
A charge of criminal tres-
pass in a habitation was dis-
missed against Mr. Aqel in the
interest of justice.
A charge of resisting ar-
rest, search or transport was
dismissed against Gregory L.
Morris after he was sentenced
to federal prison on another
charge.
Joshua Scott Mahaffey pled
guilty to a charge of DWI. He
was sentenced to 90 days in
jail. The sentence was sus-
pended, and he was placed on
probation for 18 months. He
was ordered to pay a $2,000
fine.
A charge of driving while
license invalid was dismissed
against Jeffery Nicoleia Luster
in the interest of justice.
Jimmy Ray Tinsley, II pled
guilty to a charge of posses-
sion of less than two ounces of
marijuana. He was sentenced
to 61 days in jail and ordered
to pay a $1,000 fine.
A charge of resisting ar-
rest, search or transport was
dismissed against Kelcey Da-
mon Porter after it was taken
into consideration with a case
pending in Franklin County
District Court.
Holly Diane Carpenter pled
guilty to a charge of posses-
sion of less than two ounces of
marijuana. She was ordered to
pay a $1,000 fine.
Court costs and attorneys
fees are assessed in each of the
cases when appropriate.

ACCIDENT
Deloney strikes power pole

Thomas Lee Deloney, age
58 of Mount Vernon, was
involved in an accident on
Friday, April 4.
Mr. Deloney was south
bound on Kaufman St. in a
2000 white Ford F-150 pick-
up. According to the report,
he failed to control his speed,
lost control, and collided with
a SWEPCO power pole. He
was taken by ambulance to
East Texas Medical Center
in Mount Vernon with non-
incapacitating injuries.
Power company personnel
were on site later that evening
to replace the pole and restore
power to the neighborhood.
No injuries were reported in
an accident on 1-30 on Sunday, hydroplaned and struck the
April 6 around 4:30 p.m. concrete divider. The vehicle
