jess jauuin The Ironic Resignation
Today is the tenth anniversary of the resignation of Richard M. Nixon
from the presidency.
The nation has had three presidents since those calamitous days of
1973-74 which finally ended in disgrace for the thirty-seventh President of
the United States of America.
Though literally brought to his knees (when he, according to Dr. Henry
Kissinger, prayed at the White House in a stressful moment of despair),
former President Nixon has never admitted to wrongdoing.
Though the country was going through torment and "smoking guns” of
evidence were found shooting from the White House, Nixon tossed his
most trusted friends and accomplices to the wolves hoping he would be
spared and gain a respite from exposure of his complete deceit of the
American people to whom he was pledged by oath and allegiance to speak
truthfully and act honorably.
The greatest asset we have learned from the entire Watergate debacle is
that we have a superb form of government with a superior and just
document for governing: The Constitution.
Nixon abbrogated his right to lead and govern. He was worse than the
thief who steals and is caught with his hand in the till. He tried to steal the
most valuable asset an American citizen has: his freedom and freedom of
choice through the ballot box. See 7ess Jawin Page 18

Peres Tries To Form Coalition
of the Alignment (coalition),
which includes Mapam. Once
concluded, we shall examine
the results and decide if we
shall go for it or not.”
Ezer Weizman also confer-
red with Peres. His Yahad
Party gained three seats in
the new Knesset. His al-
legiance to a coalition could
be critical as lobbying for
strength continues in Peres’
21 day attempt to form a
government from August 5.
If he cannot achieve his goal
in the three weeks, he can
apply for another 21 day
extension.

OLYMPIC MEMORIAL SERVICE — Mimi and Gur Weinberg, wife and son of the late Moshe Weinberg —
Israel’s wrestling coach was the first of 11 Israeli Olympic athletes and coaches murdered by Arab ter-
rorists at the Munich Olympics in 1972 - participated in a memorial service for the Munich 11 at the
Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. They were joined, on the eve of the XXIII Olympic
Games, by over 500 community leaders and former Olympians in calling for the International
Olympic Committee to commemorate the Israeli athletes murdered on Sept 5-6, 1972. During the ser-
vice, the visably shaken Mrs. Weinberg called upon the world to "not follow in the foot-steps of cold-
blooded international terrorism." Gur, 12, was born just two weeks before his father’s tragic death
and concluded the service by recting the mourners’ kaddish for his father. (For more Olympic Cover-

Jockeying for a coalition
was Labor Party leader
Shimon Peres’ main objec-
tive this week following his
appointment Sunday as
Prime Minister-designate by
Israeli President Chaim Her-
zog.
This is easier said than
done because of the close-
ness of last month’s elec-
tion and contentions be-
tween Israel’s 15 parties of
which Labor and Likud are
dominant but still do not
have respecitvely a majority
of 61 votes.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir, who will hold the
office until a coalition is
formed and accepted by
Herzog, said Peres will fail
in the formation of a
coalition because one of
Labor’s supporters, Mapam
is too opposed to Likud to
allow a national unity
government to succeed.
Mapam Knesset member
Naftalie Feder said that
although it was “to early” to
count Mapam out of a
coalition, “we still think
there are too many conflicts”
to form a new government.
Labor Party’s Secretary-
General, Haim Bar-Lev said:
“We’ve agreed that Mr.
Peres is authorized to nego-
tiate with parties on behalf
