JEFFERSON TEXAS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11 1905

Esperanco Gooellovo who is writ-
ing a series of thoughtful articles on
tho personal phases of a business
womans life in tho Now Idea Wo
mans Magazine and turning up a-
fresh idea or two in each number
Bays in tho March issue that tho
business woman belongs to the mid-
dle class and thather morals are
likely to be those of her class
It is generally admitted the world
over bIio continues that a rea-
sonably congenial work tends to
produce a healthy mental moral
and physical development Tho
middle class has j ust this reasonable
amount Tho class above has it
not It is to be assumed that the
writer considers that the moral con-
dition of the class below is also
threatenedbut by the excess rather
than by theJack of work Suppos
ingthentha t a right moral equilib
rium is the thing desirable above
all otherstho thing that more than
anything else tendsto give happi-
ness to the human race it would
appear that instead of tho social as-
pirations of the working claBS tend-
ing toward tho leisured cluss the
reverse bhould be the caseand the
social aspirations of both the high-
est and tho lowest classes should
converge toward those people of
moderate incomps who live good
and happy lives in tho golden mean

THE TOWN CHURCH
I use the torm town church
because of the opportunities af-
forded the church in town of doing
good as superior to the church in
tho country More people nre
brought in personal contact not
only in business matters but qIbo
in the house of wot ship
I use tho word church not de-
nominationally but in the usual
acceptation of the toim so as to in-
clude all professed churches of
Churches of Christ I am not
writing this as a sectarian but in a
broader sense to include all pro-
fessed christians and I am per-
sonal in what I say and I want
you to feel that I mean you and
not your neighbor s You say you
are a member of the chuich of
Christ For what was that church
eritablished I nnswer to bo a-
light to the world Let your light
so shine that others seeing your
good works may glorify your Fath-
er who is in heaven Have you
that light Can others see it and
if so how and where is it to be
seen You say I sometimes
when I feel like it go to church
So do most of the unsaved and
their conduct is as respectful as
yours where fs the light Do you
make a real sacrifice to attend to
your duties as a christian Do you
attend prayer meetings Oh you
say that is at night So is your
board meetings the society the
club the lodge and perhaps oth-
er gathering to which you attend
Whore is your light b a christian
If at all it is under the biishel
You suy I pay the preacher
So do some of the world who are
as liberal or more so than many
church members and I had rather
go to some who are onlled out-
siders than to many who make
pretentions to be christian Look
at the various churches of our
town and see the deplorable con-
dition Pulpits vacant and if a
pastor is eecuied it is not long till
certain ones will begin to find fault
and criticisethem absenting them-
selves from the services of tho
church thus discouiaging the
pieicher and heaping upon him a
burden he will not carry long but
will throw it off and leave for more
inviting fields How many minis-
ters good men and able preachers
have left our town in the labt ten
years said to have been caused by
the opposition of a few members of
the various chuiches Is it not a
shame that professed christians
cannot harmonize
Now let us see how many have
famil prayers Stand up one
two three four five six well
nearly every one of them are
preachers Whore are the deacons
the elders stewards and other
leaders in the church You say
we had prayers for awhile after
our protracted meeting but grad-
ually we quit Yps what became
of the light It flickered and went
out Is that you If so repent
and do your first works saith God
for
Prayer is tho christians vital breath
The christians native nir
