Senator Bailey has mado reply
to charges recently brought against
iiiru As everyon knew his reply
would bo a strong vindication of his
position his friends will eay his
oppouonts have boon completely
defeated by his straight forward
explanation If Senator Bailey
has done no wrong then the peo
jilo of Texas should know it he
should ho vindicated In somo
way tho people have had tho im-
pression that congrossmen and
senators gavo up their law practice
when elected If this haB boon
wrong then tlio people should
know it It has been tho impres-
sion of tho pooplu that the salary
jioid congressmen and sonators
would enable them to live without
this laborious outside labor It
was thought in thiB way they would
not bo led into temptation If
howovor there Is no wrong in
practicing ones profession that
tho idea horetofure prevailing is
antiqnated tho people should
know it and every one is given tho
same ohanco The Jimplecutk
does not want to seo injustico done
any one Tho vindication or con
damnation of Sonator Bailoy must
be or should bo written by tho poo
pie to thoir verdict he will not or
should not object

The liWf rlnp unty Good Gov-
ernment Club has leeiijld nn ad-
dress to tho people oi TqRns signed
by H P King president It starts
with tho broad nsse rtaon Joseph
W Bailey by his owtyadmissionB
is a traitor senator It further
says Wo aro not emieB of Mr
Bailoy and notbimr has occurred
to make us suciij Fow it any of
us aro evon a qiintances of his
Our estimate of Mr Baileys char
actor is boBjed tolely not on what
others siyy of aim but on what ho
says offiimfolf By his own word
of rruouth we denounce him hh a
selCconfeJBod traitor to the people
Wc simply ask that he be judged
Joy his own utterances It again
says Few if any in private con-
versation attempt to defend him
From our observation and inquiries
wo firmly boliovo that an over-
whelming majority of tho people
who have read Mr Baileys speech
dolivored on June 27lh in the
United States senate in defense of
the charges brought against him
agroo with us that ho can no
LONOEK UEPIIESENT THE PEOPLE OF
texas Again it says We pa-
tiently waited lor abler and more
influential mon to at least enter a
public protest if not to start a move-
ment against Mr Baileys reelec-
tion On what meat does this our
Caesar food that none shall dare
oppose him It suggests as a few
of the suitable persons eminently
qualified to fill his place Mr Jus-
tice Brown Horace Chilton B H
Rico of Falls county the Demo-
cratic nominee for Governor O T
Holt or M M Crane In speak-
ing of these men it sayB We
might name a score of others truer
if loss brilliant representatives of
tho people of imperial Texas men
who will honestly and truly repre-
sent the people of Texas on the
floor of tho senato It further
sayB Our claim to a respectful
hearing is that of private citizens
who aro interested simply in the
good name of the State It is an
address that Bhould be read in its
entirety to bo properly appreciated
It again says Our State has not
sunk to the level of a Rhode Island
or of Pennsylvania where people
knowingly return traitors to the
United States senate Listen
As friends and admirers of the
lamented James S Hogg the mem-
bers of tho Harris County Good
Government imbibed in part from
that magniflcenttribune of the peo
pie a hatred of the methods almost
universally used by epecialprivi
lege seeking corporations and in
bis honored namo wo will attempt
what we believe his great heart
would have him to do in this emer-
gency Listen It says Mr
Bailoy will doubtless talk all right
he always does As an orator
and an actor he is matchless and
if the public opinion is sufficiently
aroused and no constitutional ob-
jections ore trumped up ho will
vote all right But tho devilish-
ness the betrayal of the people is
seldom accomplibhed in tho open
and on the floor of congress it ib
dono in the secrecy of the com-
mittee noons It yien asks the
question Who sent Mr Bailoy to
Texas to intercede for tho Standard
Oil Co before the department of
State at Austin Who made it
enough of au object to induce a
famous United States senator to
travel from Washington to Texas
and bring to bear upon tho Sucre
tary of State the tremendous forces
of his person and political in
flucrAce 1 This itrdeecT a perti
nent and significant inquiry Many
others equally as pertinent ques-
tions aro askod In leferenco to
the WatersPierce Oil Co the ad-
dress has this to say For
twenty years or uioro the Waters
Pierce Oil Co had operated in
Texas unopposod by the Standard
and tirao and again it had by no
farlous practices crushed all at
tompts to compote vitb it The
Standard Oil Co had novor boon
known to fail to wage relentless
war on evory real competitor
Tho only conclusions is it was in
fact tho Standard It quotes from
Mr Bailoys speoch in which ho
said I despiso those public men
who think thoy mnBt remain poor
in order to bo considered honest
Tho address is quito longthyand is
tho hot stuff It concludes by
saying Mr Bailey is not tho nomi
nee of tho Democracy of Texas
Ho was never legally declared such
The negative of tho resolution en-
dorsing him for tho souatorship at
tho Dallas Convention was novor
put to a vote When tho chairman
without warrant of parliamentary
law declared it carried a howl of
disapproval swept over tho as3em
bly But aside from this tho legis-
lature can eloct tho United States
senator and under the circum-
stances of this case its members
are neither morally nor legally
bound by tho failure of any one to
run against Mr Bailey in tho pri-
maries It will be thoir duty to
heed tho wishes of tho peoplo and
tho peoplo can and will yet speak
to them in no uncertain terms
It is but just that the people
throughout tho State should make
their wishes known in tbo premises
It occurs to ub that unlesss this is
done tho legislature can no nothing
elso but reelect Senator Bailoy to
succeed himself But if the peo
plo under present conditions re
instruct their representatives then
some one else could bo put in nom-
ination It is very evident this is
a case wherein the people should
speak out If Senator Bailey has
done wrong his place is at home
If he baB done no wrong vindicate
him by Bending him back Let the
trial be fair and just no whitewash
brush should housed The people
cant permit a man in high places
to do wrong the example to the
rising young mon is too great
Every young man should learn
that a good name is better than
riches That the people have the
right to retire any man when in
their belief he has deviated from
the paths marked out by the great
men of the country is beyond
question If spuce allowed the
Jimptecute would give tho address
quoted from in full so thai every-
one could read for himself and
reach his own conclusions
The P S to the address reads
as follows We make no com-
ment on the sensational testimony
rocbntly given at St Louis by H
Cluy Pierce of tho Waters Pierce
Oil Co from which it appears that
13000000 in securities belonging
apparently to Standard Oil mag-
nates were placed in Mr Boileys
hands for certain trust purposes
In accordance with the intention
expressed nt tho beginning of this
address wo have confined our-
selves to admissions and state-
ments made by Mr Bailey
OBITUARY
On Friday afternoon Sept 14
1906 dfcath again entered our
midst arid seloclod a victim in tho
person tof W A Clark brotherin
law of V R and C H Proctor
Mr Clark was born in that old
chivalroUB and hospitable stale of
Georgia in tho year 18G6 Soon
after tho war when he was but tea
years old his father camo to Texas
since which time ho has resided in
Morris and Marion counties until
hin sudden death Sept ldth
In tho death of W A Clark his
family lost a devoted hupband and
father and the community lost a
valuable citizen It waB never his
lot to possess much of this worlds
wealth though during the half
century of bis sojourn here he
created much of the wealth that
added to the worlds enjoyment
With his own hand he providod
well for his own with the fruits of
honest labor and when culled hence
his brow wore the quiet expression
of one having finished p Godap
pointod miesion honestly and con-
scientiously When gazing upon
hiB peaceful features one felt that
no hungry child would ever curse
his memory for having wrung from
their famishing lips the bread of
toil that he might amass a fortuno
In what respect differs the rich
and poor when visited by death
Wo brought nothing into this
world and it is certain we can carry
nothing out says Paul Rich or
poor we pass alike through the
portals of death and appear naked
in the presence of our God The
haughty pride of the arrogant rich
and the meekness and humility of
the humble poor all disappears in
the grave and all stand bafore God
upon an eternal equality Men
were created equal and the dust of
rich and poor mingles without
classification in the tomb while
the posterity of the rich will be the
poor of the next generation and tho
posterity of the poor will bo the
rich and powerful
In his home he was kind and af-
fectionate no business cares ever
made him forget that he owed a
duty to his family that the happi-
ness of those dependent upon him
should be considered first
Surrounded by numerous friends
and relatives he was quietly laid
to rest in New Prospect cemetery
on Sept 15 1906 After having
spent a hoif century with friends
and loved ones he has now fallen
into that mysterious sleep that
knows no waking While agei
melt into oblivion his unconscious
dust will mingle with mother eurth
to appear and re appear in emerald
verdure and blooming flowers that
make glad the hearts ot man His
spirit sleepB not in the tomb but
ever conscious it continues exis-
tence in a reafm prepared by a God
of justice mercy and immeafeurable
love
n Ho leaves a wife and seven chil-
dren to mourn his loss To them-
e would give our deepest sympa-
thy We know that words how-
ever eloquently vspoken will not
heal a heart lacerated by grief We
can only commend them to him
who said Come unto me all yo
Hint labor and aro heavy laden and
I will give yon rest R

RELIEF IN PERUNA
The State haB filed a edit to oust

State The proceeding of the
case will bo watched with great in-
terest The development from a-
political standpoint will he care
fully scrutinized It may be that
something extremely interesting
will no aloubt come to tho front
It may bo tho unmaking of some
the making of others If oil is ad-
vanced to meet the cost of the
tuits penalties and so forth then
the common people will havo to go
back to pine knots
