This perfilndu waB then sent totbe

where its beauU appealed at on a
to all and assured for it a eadtf
sale and good prices
The success of this industry is
largely due to the cooperation of
these ladies throughout the Btatfcs
who popularized it by buying it
themselves and placing it within
the reach of the richest of the land
Innumerable benefits have ac-
crued from the sale of this work
not only bringing a livelihood to
the Mexican women but paying off
church debts raising mortgages
from homes helping the shutitiB
giving subcor to the widows and
orphans all over this broad land
The tumbled down jacals now give
place for neat little cottages form-
ing a pretty suburban to Browns
ville called Villa Nuera Here
where gaunt hunger stalked abroad
and the air was burdened with the
cries of distressit to be seen bright
eyes and rosy cheeks and to be
heard meiry sung and laughter us
the women ply the needle like a
little shuttle up and down weav-
ing thiB beautiful lace
Thus thiB industry begun with
several hundred dollars raised by
a few charitable ladies pf Browns
villehas grown into commercial
value rivaling in importance the
Honiton and Irish lace industries
founded for the betterment of the
workers by Queen Victoria and
other distinguished ladies of Great
Britnin for a conservative estimate
of the amount received by the wo-
men for this perfilado is 100000
annually
