im
bill now before congress
which proposes to pay annually to
subsidize American ships the sum
of $6,000,000. The ohj ct is to
increase American ship » uilding.
At present America pays annual!)
$200,000,000 to foreign ship own
ers to carry her imports and ex-
ports. The ships that earn this
money receive annually from their
governments $25,000,000 in sub
sidies. It is plain, therefore, that
American ship owners can not
compete with foreign ship owners
heavily subsidized, especially m»
since it is an established fact that
it costs 70 per cent, more to operate
an American ship with American
seamen than it does an English
vessel. This single item of lain r
is onlv one of several that make a
subsidy necessary to build up an
American merchant marine Na-
tional' pride should prompt ti e
passage of this bill, laying asn e
all other and mercenary incciilivt.-.
America should stop at nothu g
short of supremacy in everything
that is worthy, and what is moie
so than the shipping interest? We
excel in railway traffic; why not in
ocean traffic?
