PERSONAL GLIMPSES...
A Bride 67 Years Ago—Mrs. bailie Wagner
They said she was a beauti-
ful bride in her princess blue
satin gown, with lace trim from
neckline to hem. She was the
slim, young daughter of a well-
known family, the Thomas Hay-
hursts, who were landowners
south of Howe, and the grand-
niece of a Texas Governor,
James Throckmorton. The bride
was Callie Hayhurst, and her
groom was a tall, handsome
man from Illinois. Their wed-
ding took place 67 years ago/.
A story centers around the
wedding gown. It seems Callie
Hayhurst was a girl of ac'i7>n
and decided she would shop fa-
round. She went to the largest
department store in North Tex-
as, Murpheys, and sought the
advice of E. L. Roberts, form-
erly of Howe and now of Rich-
ardson, an expert on fine mat-
erials, and they together select-
ed a shimmering, soft blue sat-
in.
The dress was designed in
Van Alstyne with the help of
an artist, the late Moore Cart-
wright, and put together by an
expert Van Alstyne seamstress.
The dress, today, still shows
its beauty and elegance.
Callie Hayhurst and James
Hodgins, were married in a
quiet home ceremony, with only
relatives and close friends in
attendance. They becameTTand-
owners in the Howe area. After
11 years of married life, her
husband died, and she carried
on. After remaining a widow
for several years, she then mar-
ried Eugene Wagner, and they
together extended their land
opperations. He died, and still
she carried on. Her young son,
Delphi, after making an out-
standing success as a scientist,
died suddenly. She reared a
•granddaughter and a grandson.
She recently sold a tract of
land northeast of Howe, 226
acres, for development purpos-
es, and will soon be moving to
