St. Augustine Church, established in 1789, will be celebrating its
bicentennial this year with many activities.
Parish to celebrate bicentennial year
By Manni V. Hachar
Laredo Telecommunications Center
LAREDO—Two hundred years
ago, 34 years after Don Tomas San-
chez de la Barrera settled here to
establish the Villa de San Augustine de
Laredo, the bishop of Guadalajara
elevated the mission of San
Augustine to parish status. To com-
memorate this bicentennial anniver-
sary, Father Thomas Davis, pastor of
San Augustine Church, is coor-
dinating a year-long celebration.
San Augustine Church history is
relevant to all Laredoans because it is
tied to the very roots of Laredo.
Laredo was established in 1755
when four Catholic families came with
Sanchez, who was captain in the Royal
Army of Spain during the reign of
King Carlos III.
In 1756 the Villa consisted of 15
families who built a makeshift wooden
chapel which was used by missionary
priests for 10 years.
In 1855 there were 200 Catholics in
town who took on the task of building
a new “open-air’' stone structure for
the church. Father Davis said that con-
sequently, San Augustine Plaza and
the surrounding streets were laid out
and that, in 1789 the misson was for-
mally declared a parish.
According to Father Davis, in 1866
Father Alphonse Souchon laid the
foundation for the present church
structure with only 16 pesos. Local
Laredoans contributed generously
toward its completion.
Many priests and even one bishop
have made St. Augustine their home.
Father Davis said that 95 priests from
the Oblates of Mary Immaculate con-
tributed greatly to Laredo’s
evangelization efforts for 65 years in
which they served San Augustine
Church and School.
The church has endured if'; ihare of
hardship. On April 7, 1866, the
“Eotas” and the “Guaraches” fought
at San Augustine Plaza and several
people were killed. And the church
was severely damaged when the Rio
Grande flooded in 1905, but it still
stands as the oldest landmark in this
border town which has grown to 16
parishes and a population of 100,000.
A meeting was held jan. 22 at St.
Augustine parish hall to plan bicenten-
nial celebration activities. These will
include a reunion of former students of
St. Augustine High School; beautifica-
tion and remodeling of the church,
auditorium and church grounds; a
family festival on May 7; the establish-
ment of a landmark; a third visit by
the statue of Our Lady of San Juan de
Los Lagos and many other activities.
The highlight of the year will take
place Aug. 27 when Bishop Rene H.
Gracida will offer a bicentennial Mass
at 3 p.m. and proclaim that week
“San Augustine Week.” ^
