Lord and a deep devotion to Our Lady of
Guadalupe are the driving forces behind
• n upcoming pro-life march which will
extend from the western tip of the Diocese
of Corpus Christi at Laredo to the eastern
edge here.
On Out, 6a group of mare hers will begin
the ! 50-mile journey which will conclude
on Oct, 13. What began as a "crazy idea”
for Manuel Garcia, founder of the local
pro-life organization Lay Maryans, has
become a reality with the support of other
pro-life activists and Bishop Rene H.
< iracid.i.
Since 1983 the Lay Maryans-who offer
counseling to women considering an ahor-
tion-havc sponsored an annual pro-life
march here front Our Lady of Ptlar Outrun
to Christ the King Church during October
which is Respect Life Month. Hundreds
have attended the march, which crosses in
from of a local abortion clinic, to pray for
the unborn.
!n a recent interview Garcia explained
the events which led to the reality of this
year's diocesan-wide march. He recalled
that Iasi year Bishop Gracida agreed to
walk in the 1990 march with the Lay
Maryans and other faithful who partici-
pate. Since the bishop was going to be
present, Garcia -aid he wanted the march
to be especially meaningful and consid-
ered the idea of walking across the entire
diocese.
He said he decided to call Rex Moses,
founder of Body of Christ Rescue, and ask
for his support. “One of the reasons 1
called Rex is that as Lay Maryans we have

CORPUS CHRISTI- ‘The role of the
courts is not to act as a shield, allowing
society to hide from moral choices which
are rightfully society's,” but rather to bring
such issues “into the arena of public de-
bate,” Missouri Supreme Court Justice
F.dward D. Robertson told nearly 400
lawyers, physicians, clergy and their guests
gathered at a banquet following the first
Red Mass in the Diocese of CorpusChristi.
Over 200 attended the Mass, celebrated
by Bishop Rene H, Gracida on Sept. 17 ut
Corpus Chrisli Cathedral. The Red Mass is
a medieval tradition celebrated in coun-
tries throughout the world to mark the
beginning of the judicial and scholastic
year. The Mass derives its name from the
red vestments worn by the celebrant to
symbolize the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit was referred to several limes
by Msgr. Leonard Pivonka during his homily
at the traditional Mass. “God’s Spirit is
the source of wisdom by which wc Chris-
tians must live just and holy lives,” he
said.
He remarked that this wisdom must be
used in decision making. “Balancing rights
and duties is no easy matter. But it must he
carried out in society for the good of soci-
ety.”
Msgr. Pivonka, the judicial vicar, con-
trasted the judgements of men and women
