Hare Takes First At State Fair Swing Accident
Injures Two Children
Lonnie Hare, Rt. 2 Archer County,
Archer City 7th grader, has received a
first place ribbon at the State Fair of
Texas for his pastel landscape.
The age group was the junior division
of 12 through 17 year olds. This was
his first time to enter a picture in any
competition. He has been taking les-
sons off and on for a couple of years
from Terri Lambert of Wichita Falls.
Hare expressed a great deal of surprise
at his beginning success. He has en-
tered a pastel in the Wichita County
Fair and will hear this week on its
judging.

To Celebrate Golden Anniversary
Two local children were injured Sun-
day when a heavy pipe swing frame
fell on them. The accident happened
in Scotland. Dustin Burks, 4 1/2 year
old daughter of Billy Don and Karen
Burks of Archer City, was treated at
How much Do You Pay To Be Part of The In-Crowd?
Being with the in group makes us feel like we are something just a little bit better than those who are
not. Being part of the in-crowd pays big dividends when you win the popuylarity honors. The price of
all this attention can also be costly.....Too High at times.
Some groups demand such loyalty
that even our families take a back seat
to our desire for attention. Pleasing our
friends can become a great pressure
point (peer pressure) when it is in
conflict with what we know in our
hearts is right. When friends demand
the first place in our lives, the impor-
tance of God and family are misplaced.
God knew there would be many such
conflicts all through our lives...not just
in the teen years. He knew we would be
tempted to follow the in-crowd rather
than our hearts.
"The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray."
Proverbs 12:26 NKJ
Don't chose the wrong road. Though the pressure to follow the crowd for acceptance may be great, God's
power to overcome these temptations is greater.

District Rep To Speak At Local DRT Meeting
The Texas-Santa Fe Expedition of
1841 will be the topic when Mrs.
Frank Potts of Floydada addresses the
Dr. Branch T. Archer Chapter of the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas on
Saturday, in Archer City.
Mrs. Potts, Dist. X Representative of
the 5,000 member heritage organ-
ization, was awarded the 1984 Mamie
Wynne Cox Award for her research on
the expedition, "Death Watch on the
Quintufue".
The expedition made camp at the junc-
tion of Wichita River and Holliday
Creek on August 4, 1841, under the
impression they were camping on Red
River. The name Holliday was given
to the little creek years later when
surveyors found the name of Capt. J.J.
Holliday carved on a tree at the camp
site. On Aug. 8 of that year, the
expedition had turned west in search
for a route to Santa Fe, and made camp
near what is now Dundee.
Linda Barron, president of the DRT
chapter, said that invited guests to the
meeting will include members of the
Rebecca Jane Fisher Chapter, Wichita
Falls DRT, and the newly organized
Chisholm Trail Chapter of Henrietta.
Marisue Burleson Potts and her
husband, Frank, operate a Hereford
ranch between Floydada and Matador.
She serves as chairman for the Motley
County Historical Commission, is
secretary for the Gen. James Smith
Chapter, DRT and is Dist. X Repre-
sentative, DRT.
Further information on the meeting
may be obtained by calling Mrs. J.D.
Mullis of Archer City or Mrs. Ruby
L. Robertson, Holliday.
105 Year Old Quilt To Be Exhibited At Dundee
Among the 100 or so quilts expected
to be exhibited at the Dundee Quilt
Show on Saturday, will be a 105 year
old Victorian Crazy Quilt owned by
Corrine Williams of Dundee.
The quilt was made from hand-woven
fabric which had been dyed with dyes
of home-grown plants. It was made
for the great-grandmother of Mrs.
Williams, Mrs. A.W. Gartman, and
has been passed from one generation to
another.
Other antique quilts to be exhibited
will be some made by the late Mrs.
J.J. Miller in the 1890s. These
include the Double Wedding Ring, the
Texas Star, and a string quilt made
while the Millers were living in a dug-
out in Oklahoma Territory in 1905.
This quilt is made from scraps of
material from the children's clothing.
Each block has a child's initials em-
broidered on it. The quilts are owned
by Lucille Miller Moseley of Dundee.
The show will open at the Commun-
ity Building at 10 a.m. Saturday and
close at 7 p.m. Admission to the
show is $1 per person and all proceeds
will go to the building fund.
A drawing will be held during the
show to give away a Dresden Plate
quilt. Tickets for the drawing are avail-
able from Joan Gilmore, Helen
Holmes or other members of the show
committee
Mrs. Lucille Moseley of

stitches on a quilt made by her
mother, Mrs. JJ. Miller in
