Kennedy then asked Hendry to
explain how his proposed tax on spend-
ing, which Hendry has said would al-
low an income tax cut, would not be
detrimental to the non-rich. “Necessi-
ties like food, shelter, and clothing
would be exempt, of course. As you
earn more, you spend more, therefore
you’ll pay more in taxes,” Hendry said.
Kennedy finished up by asking
Johnson about her staff firings.
Johnson explained that her staff wasn’t
performing, some workers thinking
that their employment was just a “show
job,” so these people were replaced

Next, Kennedy began the Forum’s
second portion by asking Crenshaw
and Sweatt why they were running
against a fellow Democrat incumbent.
Crenshaw said, “We all have a right to
citizen participation. The incumbent
hasn’t fought against crime or publicly
addressed anything about our [black]
problems.” Sweatt said that the di-
verse district needed better leader-
ship and not just “committee advisory
work.”

because “no work, no pay, no stay,”
she said.
The floor was then opened to audi-
ence questions and the majority of
them were directed to the incumbent.
Johnson’s toughest question was asked
by a gentleman who wanted to know
why her voting record shows a liberal
stance on social issues.
Johnson said, “I am very proud of
my voting record. I voted the way that
I did to uphold the Constitution’s right
to privacy.... Government shouldn’t be
meddling in our personal lives.”
The forum finally wrapped up after
several audience questions. Carolyn
Chandler, Assistant Director of Uni-
versity Relations said, “We’ve been
doing a lot to get students involved this
election year. I’m really disappointed
with the turnout today since UD stu-
dents have always been very civic
minded.”
Disappointment was echoed by
many of the audience members. “We
all like to complain and everyone has
complaints. But, when it’s time to
make a difference, you need to get
involved so that you can actually form
a valid opinion and back it up. Other-
wise, you don’t have a right to object,”
Theola Haggar, president of the Col-
lege Democrats, said.
