the South Central Region of
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority’s 62nd Regional
Conference at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel here.
Alpha Kappa Alpha members from
throughout Arkansas, Louisiana,
New Mexico, and Texas will attend
the conference.
The conference chairman will be
Katie Jones, assisted by Dorothy
Friday and Gloria Matune.
Jacqueline Edwards is the presiding
officer of the conference.

subject of meeting
A young women's conference
aimed at helping local junior and high
school women choose a career in fire
science, law enforcement, and other
non-traditional areas will be held April
9 at San Antonio College.
The program, “You’ve Got the
Whole World in Your Hands!” is from
8:30a.m. until2p. m. and is sponsored
by the college’s Women’s Center.
KMOL-TV morning anchor Carol
Cavazos will make the keynote
address. The Saturday conference
will feature professionals representing
non-traditional career fields for
women.
Panelists include a firefighter from
the San Antonio Fire Department, a
researcher from Southwest Research
Institute, an architect, a police officer,
and more.
The Alamo Community College
District is offering seven Master’s
Fellowships, valued at approximately
$33,000 each calendar year to Black
and Hispanic students who have been
accepted into an accredited Master’s
degree program. The College District
is offering the fellowships in the hopes
of increasing the number of Hispanic
and African-American teachers at its
three colleges, Palo Alto, St. Philips,
and San Antonio College.
Fellowship candidates are being
sought in the areasof architecture, ait,
business adihiitistnition, chemistry,
English/foreign language, fine arts,
government, history, mathematics,
music, natural science, political
Eastside Optimists
celebrate 20 years
The Eastside Optimist celebrates
its 20 years of service to East Side
youth with a banquet on April 8.
The club was founded January 24,
1974, focusing on youth, just as its
parent club, Optimist International
does. The club's motto is "Friends of
Youth." The club also focuses on
optimism as a way of life.
Activities planned for 1994 in-
clude organizing and supporting one
Octagon Club and one Junior Opti-
mist Club, participating in a Bas-
ketball Classics, Bike Rodeo, and
oratorical and essay contests.

which will be held at the Ft. Sam
Houston Officer's Club at 7 p. m.,

Four local students
named National
Merit scholars
Four San Antonio African-American
high school students have been chosen
to receive $2,000 National
Achievement Scholarships from the
National Merit Scholarship
Corporation.
The four are one of about 600 Black
Americans chosen nationwide for the
scholarships.
The San Antonio winners are
Byron M. Armstrong of John Jay
High School, Tamika Denson of
Health Careers High School, Wesley
Hollomon of John Marshall High
School, and Cynthia Manns of Holmes
High School.
Armstrong plans to major in
engineering. Armstrong is a member
of the National Honor Society, Air
Force Junior ROTC, Drill Team, Jets
Engineering Society, English Honors
Society, Latin Club, and is Senior
Class Representative.
Denson’s career goal is pediatric
medicine. She is a member of the
National Honor Society, Mu Alpha
Theta, Health Occupations Students
of America, Afro-American Club,
LatinClub, History Club, SpiritTeam,
Yearbook Staff, and Health
Professions Outreach Program.
Hollomon plans to become a
psychiatrist. He is a member of Mu
Alpha Theta, vice-president of the
National Honor Society, Spanish
Honor Society, English Honor
Society, and has received the Rotary
Youth Leadership Award. He plays
first chair Baritone Saxophone in the
All Area Band.
Manns plans to major in chemical
engineering. She is a member of the
marching and symphonic bands,
varsity track team, basketball team,
National Honor Society, English
Honor Society, Mu Alpha ITieta, and
the Academic Decathlon Team. She
is a four year honor roll student.
The 1994 competition began when
more than 95,000 Black students
requested consideration in the
Achievement Program when they took
the 1990 PSAT/NMSQT. Last
September some 1500 of the highest
scoring participants were named semi-
finalists on a regional representation
basis.
