though the oad would ha built to
double quick lima, but that it will
work with auch wonderful benefit to
the State we eery much doubt. That
tha country along tha road will act-
tie up rapidly ia aliuoat certain aad
it ia aleo certain that the r<-a*i will
aervo to carry tha product of our la-
bor where it will serve to build up
depota in other Stetaa, for which the
people of Texaa are to be taxed «•
they never ware before for auch pur

The wisdom foraahadowetl in tha
International railroad policy »• ju»t
auch wisdom as the ]>eople of the
Stete of New York would have shown
bad they Riven 110,000 to tbe mile
to build a rood from Penaylvauia to
Vermont. That ia all the wisdom
there ia in our new railroad policy.
New York very properly made de-
pots in her own State and her rail-
road policy waa to mako her roada
bnug tribute to them. Aa a reault
of auch action New York la the fore-
moat State in tbe Union.
The International mad ignore* the
fact that Texaa has depot*, and
that they are located upon the coast,
with navigation u|mU the highway of

world, fully a« advantageous aa are

ia direct trade with all part* of tha
world which increaaea the importance

State or country. Ignoring these
facte will moat certainly retard the
growing importance of thie State.
Texaa n an empire which will soon
furnish trade enough to build up a
largo commercial city, which could
afford aa liticral facilitiea aa any in
the union and which would liesecond
to hut a few iu wealth nnd population
of American cities. To build up
auch a depot of commerce and wealth,
the same wisdom -hould be practiced
aa waa practiced to buildup the depot
of Naw York City, by making rail-
roada lead to and from it, and not by
leading trade and commerce from our
own centers, tu the International road
moat certainly will in tho very i a*
tion of thing*.
We sincerely hope that something
they intervene to prevent the Inter-
national road receiving 010,000 to
the mile. It is wrong to tax the
people |6,0b0,00Q for a measure
which will certainly not benefit the
State to the extent that mads would
were they made tributary to a Texas
depot.

Nothing can be of utore general
importance to tha farmer than a
geed and permanent fence to anr
rtnuJ hi- inelumrc*, and, in tbie
couutry woerea mil fanne ia impos-
sible owniug la mar City of timber,
and w here brash fences are neeaaaa
rtly abort lived, hedging becomes a
positive necessity.
Iu to-day’s paper we copy an ar-
ticle from the Rural Carolinian,
writleu by Wot, P. F. Graves iu
which ha gives his experience iu
hedging. It seem- that he has ex-
perimented with must every variety
of hedge growth, aud has thrown
aside and abandoned them all for
the cau-us, «*r aa cotannialy known,
the prickly j*ear, which aboutd* in
this portion of our Suite. Here,
where the pear ia so plentiful, me
lalmrer could hedge in thousauds of
a roe and build milgs of fence in one
year, thus making It not only the
cheapest but tha beet hedge possible
to be grown. Ws commend the ar-
ticle to thu attention of <>ur farmer*
and to all j»cr*oua contemplating
building fences or 'growing hedges,
a- being of incalculable worth to
them. It *ets at rest all quest! jus
regarding the best means of making
incluanrss.
By the by, the Rural Caroliniau
is far ahead of any agricultural
journal in the rountry and how any
farmer can keep from taking it, be-
come* almost a wonder.

origin in the movement in the Goa-

A L A nuance, of the Internation-

sing the social Democracy of Germa-
ny, says; •
“Prussia made war against tha Km-

it will be the universal duty of

they are the friends aud aiiies of all

the intervention of the Powers, and

Such is the sentiment of Republi-
can France, but then it cannot be
taken os an unanimous expression of
tho French people, if it could tho
French arc far from a defeated peo-
ple. We must remember that France
haa a strong Orleanist party that will
neyer submit to a Republic. There
is the Na(>oleonista with not alto-
gether different ideas and both par-
ties are strong enough to deluge
France in blood were outside pressure
removed. There ia a strong proha-
bility that were the Prussians to
cross the Rhine, that it would lie the
signal for a death struggle with the
factions In la Itllt France. Whether
it is better to remove the Prnssian
pressure becomes a serious if not a
very important question to the inha-
bitant* of that country who haft- the

Hy.the Nueces Valley we learn
that Dr. Kaaruey, aolleotor of «u«-
port <>f Corpus Christ!,lately brought
in from Rio Grande City tome f Iff,-
0’X> in gov rumaat gold, which is to
bo sent to she United Htatea sub-
Treasury ia New Orleans. Oen.
McCook furnished a strong escort,
under command of Lieut. Warring-
ton to aocom|iany the gold to Cor-
pus.
In this coonnctioa it io worthy to
note the bungling manner iu which
Congress has fixed the Collection
Districts. Rio tirande City hy rea-
son of her commercial ooaeection*
should be a port in the District of
Beano* Hfcatiago, and thea govern-
ment money could take the vary safe
and natural steamboat route, from
that piece to New Orleans. Mil-
lions of private dollar* are being
earned that route every year, with-
out nenewitoting the use of a guard
of troops, to insure safety, and it
would be but practicing the plainest
pmc*pbi i f safety, speed and ecuao-
my to turn the government money
through the same channel.

Morgan Line.
By notice of the agent of the
Morgari line of steamships at this
place, Mr. M. J. Goodie, it will be
noticed that the rates of fare have
been reduced to the old price. This
was brought about by roa»m of an
amendment to the Texas quarantine
law which prevent- the taxing of
passengers and erww fifty cents per
head every time his ships entered
any of the Texas ports. One was
the result of the other, und !»oth
ceased together.
In the same advertisement is a

forth the reduced rates at which in-
surance can l>e effected to all porta
of America.
Tht* Late Stale Election*.
On tbe ffth inst., there were held
elections in the States of Vermont
aud California. It is not probable
that the anxiety over the .European
war made the j»eople of those Htatea
forget to bold their elections, but
such an anxiety or * >tno other raus*.-
has been the reason of a failure to
report the same, so far as we are able
to judge from our exchange paper*,
for in them no report of the kind can
be fouud.
