ritUburg Ta September 7 Efforts to
evict the striking miners of tho Pittsburg
and Chicago Ccul company at Orangcvllle
one and a halt miles from Gastonvlllc re-
sulted In a riot and falluro on the part at
tho company to accomplish Its object
When tho news that evictions wcro to be
attempted was learned the whole vicinity
about Flnlcyvllle Gastonvllo and Orange
vllle became wildly excited About 7
oclock last night twenty deputies from
Washington Pa In charge of Chief Deputy
Joseph H Wether reached Flnloyvllle each
deputy armed with a Winchester and re-
volver but In splto of this tho strikers
headed by Polish women closed In on them
They wero gradually forced bock and
finally retreated to Gastonvlllc where they
wcro followed by a crowd of 200 men and
women At GaHlonville tho ilcputles took
refuge In the office of tho company which
was bombaidcd with stones and brlcko and
an occasional shot was fired
This morning tho trouble ot the night
reached a climax when tho deputies sallied
out from their b leged cuarters and start-
ed for Ornngcvllle Headed by womou
the strikers rushed on tho deputies with
stones clubs and pick handles and blows
tell thick and fast Ono of tho big women
wrested a rlflo from a deputy and struck
him on tho bead with it Inflicting a eerlous
Injury
By this tlmo 1000 men women and chil-
dren had Joined tho crowd They camo
from Vcnotla Snowdcn Calamity and Fln
Ityvillc
Tho deputies slowly made their way to
Orangcvllle taking all tho lnsulls and In
juries but never firing a shot They
finally took refugo In a vacant house close-
ly followed by tho mob which quickly uur
rounded tho building and threatened to
burn It
Ono of tho strikers then approached the
kotiso ylth a flag of truce and aconference
was held Tho deputies > vere ordered to
leave town and after a short parley they
decided to do so
They emerged from tho house a badly
soared lot and walking between open ranks
ot tho strikers started for Oastonvllle Al-
most every man In tho posttj was cut and
bleeding and sovcral wern seriously hurt
Ono had his right hand almost severed by
a sharp atone
As tho defeated deputies ran tho gaunt-
let they wero greeted with hisses curses
and ridicule The striker then closed ho
hlnd and marched them to tbo station
whero they took tho train for Washington
After their departure tho mob dispersed
and everything Is quiet now Officials of
tho company say no further attempt will bo

Itatcbford ot the miners organisation
started for Columbus tonight to attend tho
mass convention tomorrow Ho said he be-
lieved tho miners would accept tho CSccul
ntto and return to work
It was plainly apparent to us bo said
that tho oocrntors would never pay C9
cents tho price demanded It would to
cheaper for them to cancel all contracts
und keeitheir mines closed until tho firBt
of next year Now mv advice to my fel
lowmlncrs is to accent thn recommenda-
tion of their ofllcers If they reject it thoy
will have to flcht it out to tho cud and I
fear tho result The ndranco demanded
bv tho miners organization Is IS cents a
ton The proposed compromise gives us 11
ccnta t ton or cents lews than our de-
mand Thu gain to tho Ohio miners alone
by multiplying tho Increase by the num-
ber of tens produced annually would
amount to Jl130000 Add to this a pro
Dortlcaato advance to all branches of labor
around tho mines and It will increase tto
amount to nearly 2000000 to be divided
lictween 25000 miners and mine laborers in
this State alone Carry this Una of lia
sonlne to the other States and It will bo
found tho total iralns to tho miners of those
States will exceed J9000000 or Jn tto
nclchborhood ot J75 or 80 per man Cu
Januarv 1 another Increase in my Judg-
ment will tako place though I am unrble
to say what tho amount may be
