Santana Garza, 26, of Cuero, was
arrested Wednesday and charged
with the weekend burglary of Lands
Wholesale Grocery, Cuero Police
Sergeant Chuck Wilson said Thurs-
day.
Taken in the burglary were five to
eight cases of beer and approximate-
ly 30 cartons of cigarettes. Most of
the beer and cigarettes have been
recovered.
Wilson said the burglary was
discovered by owners Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Land at about 1:30 a.m. Sun-
day when they returned to their
residence adjoining the store in the
500 block of S. Esplanade.
Garza was in the DeWitt County
Jail Thursday under $10,000 bond.
Main Street
celebration
Tuesday
The City of Cuero’s Main Street
Project will hold a Main Street
Celebration on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
in the Cuero Public Library Park,
according to project director Mary
Helen Alexander.
Special guests will be recently
elected State Senator Ken Arm-
brister, State Representative Phyllis
Robinson, Texas Mam Street Pro-
ject Director Anice Read and city
officials.
Main Street is a self-help
downtown revitalization program
designed by the National Trust for
Historical Preservation to help
small towns bring about economic
development within the context of
historic preservation by capitalizing
on the unique historic aspects of the
downtown area.
"Of the 34 Texas Main Street
Projects currently underway, Cuero
has emerged as a strong example of
the successes that the Main Street
Project can bring,’’ stated Alex-
ander.
The Main Street Project director
added, “The Cuero Main Street
Project officially began in January
1985. Three of our local lending in-
stitutions came together to form a
low interest loan pool of $300,000 to
stimulate restoration activities in the
downtown area. Since the beginning
of the Cuero Main Street Project,
Cuero has seen a total of 41
buildings rehabilitated, a net gain of
three new businesses, 16 new jobs
created and a private reinvestment
of $1,185,711."
“At a time when the economy is
lacking strength, this small town has
exhibited confidence in its future.
Downtown Cuero has a story to tell
about survival instincts, the can-do,
will-do spirit and community pride.
Please join in on this exciting
celebration Tuesday, ’ ’ concluded
Alexander.
