Individuals qualifying for SSI
could be eligible for other services
By WILLIAM M. ARCHULETA
District Manager
Social Security Administration
VICTORIA — An individual vs ho
believes he or she may be eligible for
monthly Supplemental Security In-
come (SSI) payments should contact
any Social Security office. This also
holds true for anyone who has a
disabled or blind child who may be
eligible for monthly checks. If such
a child does not have parents, a
guardian or other responsible per-
son mav apply on the child’s behalf.
An applicant for SSI payments
can help speed up the application
process by having certain informa-
tion available at the time he or she
visits the Social Security office. This
information includes the person’s
Social Security number, a birth cer-
tificate or other proof of age, and
evidence of income and resources.
In addition, people who apply for
SSI payments on the basis of
disability should have available in-
formation about their condition and
the names and addresses of physi-
cians who treated th»*m and places,
such as clinics and hospitals, where
thev were.treated However, even if
all this information is not im
mediately available, the application
should not be held up Social Securi-
ty personnel at the local office will
help you get whatever information
is needed
Individuals who quality for SSI
may also be able to receive other ser
vices Among these are food
stamps, Medicaid, vocational
counsel, and social services, such as
housekeeping services, meals, and
transportation.
(Questions and Answers
(Question I’ve been getting
widow’s benefits from Social
Security for several years now I
understand that I can remarrv
without losing them Is this true?
Answer If vou’.re 60 or over, you
can remarrv and continue receiving
vour checks from Social Securrty
And if your new husband is getting
Sivial Secuntv benefit* and you're
62 or older, you can elect a wife's
benefit on his record it that would
be larger
(Question I'm voung and I'm
single I'm concerned that it I die
before retirement age there will be
no one to get the money I paid into
Social Security Can I leave my ac-
cumulated tunds to someone I
chiHvse ’
Answer: No, you can’t. First, the
money you pay into Social Security
is not kept in a separate account for
you. Your Social Security taxes are
used to pay beneficiaries today. Any
excess is invested in special trust
funds to ride out economic fluctua-
tions and to have enough in reserve
to be able to pay future generations.

Common sense
cold remedies
still advised
FORT WORTH - There’s no
cure for the common cold, but a hot
steamy bowl of chicken noodle soup
could help. Although such advice
may have been maligned in the past,
many doctors now appreciate some
of the common sense things
associated with grandmother
“The longer I’m in medicine the
more I believe my grandmother was
right.” said Dr Burton Schwartz of
Texas Christian University’s student
health center “Chicken soup is a
good source of nutrition, and a lot
of people think the hot steam from
the bowl is good to inL-le.”
Outside of living in a glass cage,
Schwartz said, there is no way to
prevent catching a cold,1 but there is
a lot to be said tor eating right*and
getting plenty ot rest
‘•.Although there’s no
documented proof, many doctors
believe that not eating properly and
not getting enough sleep will make
vou more susceptiblt to viruses,'
Schwartz noted
A more modern-day cold preven
lion taken by some is' Vitamin C.
Physicians are divided over us at
tects, but most agree that, taken in
reasonable closes, \ it am in C is not
harmtul It nothing else. Schwartz
believes taking the vitamin could
have a good psychological ettect
“One cannot say it's not mental
attitude that helps people get well,
stuv well, and not be as’sick."
Schwartz said
