NEW COTTON PEST

Discovered By Prof Townsehd
on Itis Recent Trip Up the
River
A Herald reporter 3Tester
day met Prof C H Tyler
Townsehd the government en-
tomologist who recently return-
ed from a trip up the river as
far Rio Grande City for the
purpose of investigating the
cotton boll weevil and asked
the professor if he found the
cotton crop much infested by
the weevil He replied in sub
stance that he found very little
cotton growing along the river
none at all in fact on the Mex-
ican side and scarcely any on
this side at Santa Maria Here
he found the cotton badly in-
fested with the weevil aud also
with the boll worm He also
reports the discovery at Santa
Maria of a new insect preying
on the cotton which he had
never before seen
This new cotton insect 5 re-
marked Prof Townsend is a
scale insect belonging therefore
to the family coccidae It has
not yet been specifically deter-
mined In appearance it is
cotton white about a quarter
of an inch long and less than
half as wide and looks like an
oblong bit of cotton stuck on
the plant It was found very
numerously on a single plant
of rattoon cotton two miles
west of Santa Maria occurring
on the leaves and steams It
injures the plant be sucking
the juice from the tissues re-
maining stationary either on
leaves or stems
This is the first and only
time that this insect has been
found on cotton in the United
States It is entirely new to
the planters It is a softbodied
insect which clothes itself with
a cottony secretion entirely
covering it
The scale insects contin-
ued the professor are among
the most injurious insects
known and spread very rapidly
so this may prove serious if it
reaches a district where much
cotton is cultivated Fortu
nately there is but little cotton
this year on the lower Rio
Grande
Until I came here no scale
insect had ever been found on
cotton Within the limits of the
United States This is the sec-
ond species of scaleinsect I
have found here on that plant
The other is a brown insect a
species of lecanium which he
found at San Tomas last month
on the bark of a live rattoon cot-
ton stalk Only few were
found It is a species which
secretes no cottony covering 5

IS The examination before
the magistrate held yesterday
of Bartolo Ybarra charged with
killing the mail driver in this
county a few days ago has
btJBh concluded and the accus-
ed held without bail It appears
from his own confessions made
to persons in whom he repos-
ed confidence but who gave in-
formation to the officers that
Ybarra and another man of the
name of Felix Diaz who lives
in Mexico did the killing for
the purpose of robbery They
secured fifty cents from the
driver and two cents from the
mail pouches
Felix Diaz is in jail in Ca
malgo and while the author-
ities cannot order his extradi-
tion because he is a Mexican
citizen still they have given
our authorities every assurance
that they will try him there
and mete out ready punish-
ment
The three others who had
been arrested will be discharg-
ed
The case was wrapped in
mystery for a while but Sher-
iff Shely with the valuable as-
sistance of Major Yzaguirre of
the Mexican forces succeeded
in tracing the matter to its
proper source
