THE JEWISH HERALD
RACIAL PREJUDICE
Rabbi Edward Browne of Boston
delivered a powerful sermon recently
defending the Jews against the unde-
served prejudices that are constantly
surrounding them In the course of
his seinion lie said
The other day a farseeing corres-
pondent of a New York daily informed
the anxious public that Long Branch
never sparkled with diamonds even at
the breakfast table as it does now
that New Jerusalem is presently the
name of that coveted resort while one
of the hotels is styled the Sheenies
Retreat and the Jewish United
States is the former United States
Hotel the Jews in Newport at the
v
Casino consume the choicest spareribs
and hams in Atlantic City the Se-
mitic nose is most prominent on the
board walk In short the Jew is util-
ized everywhere by the pateringplace
cbirespondents in the absence of obh
er interesting topics But foitunately
in the veiy same columns that ridicule
the Jew lor some by the gentile mis-
understood peculiarities the reader
finds also reports from the various in
4 stitubes of learning where Jewish stu-
dents can led off and this year more
than ever before due to the many Rus-
sian students all the gieat honors and
prizes So that if one item ibelittles
tine Jew for his love of diamonds his
noisy disposition liis pondeious pock-
etbook and his ibig nose the other
praises him for love of learning a bril-
liant intellect and a powerful brain
The hollow square of Israels camp
as seen > by Balaam thirtythree cen-
turies ago is still our true national
i
picture consisting of our peoples five
cardinal virtues in the center relig-
ion on the four sides charity busi-
ness liome sociaibility
Christians always express surprise
at the small number of Jew paupers
indeed the adage rich like a Jew
makes one think that in the estimation
iofour Christian friends there exists
no ipoor Jew But how muoh mis

taken our Clnistian brotheis are We
have paupers enough in our midst but
those paupers are not poor because
their brethren are so charitable and
charity is the wealth of the poor In-
deed we have so much charity for
the poor that it encouiages profes-
sional imposition but although we
know it we maintain it is better for
ninetynine impostors to be fed than to
let one really needy go hungry It
was a Nazarene Jew who said And
the greatest cf all is charity
Like Niagaia amongst the riveis
so is Isiael among the nations The
Jaw is noisy because he has always
been noisily rushing and roaring
through time and space followed by
relentless pcisecutors ever driving
him ahead thus being born in univer-
sal stoims ciadled in eventful tu-
mults and reared in historic cyclones
Our ibusiness enterpiise shows it-
self in New Yorks Broadway and Wall
street as well as Washington and Tie
mont streets of Boston In one gen
eiation the Jewish penniless immi-
grant and peddler has become a mei
chant pnnce and banker of interna-
tional fame lis has entered Cabinet
and United States Senate two of whom
now being in that august body The
Jew is now Ambassador abroad he
is an Admiral in our navy he is a
Mayor of great cities Ire is famous
as a lawyer as a piofessor as a man-
ufacturer and a philanthiopist and in
answer to the sneeis of the discon-
tented and unsuccessful as to the
Jews ibusiness honesty the late
Mayor Strong of New Yofk City re-
futed them iby openly praising the
Jews for their ibusiness integrity he
having dealt with them for a lifetime
as a wholesale merchant
To be frank you inust admit that
your general prejudice against the Jew
comes to you mostly through hearsay
and not from your own knowledge You
hardly ever especially in the large
cities associate with the Jew Try to
examine him for yourself You will
find that the Jew has no horns in
> Mx
k
fact his muchtalkedof Jewish nose
exists only in the Imagination of the
resort coi respondents In realitV the
Jewish ncse once proverbial has dis-
appeared in the land of the free There
is not a Jew in the land whose nose
can compare in size and hideousness
with the nose upon the face cf our
countrys virtual 1 uler J Pierpont Mor-
gan Yet nobody finds an objection
to that gentlemans nose So jou will
find your other prejudices against the
Jew disappear upon closer acquaint-
ance Nay many of the present gen
eiation of Jews are rarely taken for
Jews at all
We Jews have our faults like oth-
ers and nobody has more emphatical-
ly rebuked my brethren than myself
But taking all in all I insist that we
are better in many respects and even
in Atlantic City the greatest Jewish
resort you do not hear that the Jews
act like some leaders cf society at
Newport
Yes we are extiaagant in our
homes we love diamonds are osten-
tatious many of us are the nouveaux
rich bear in mind but we are equally
extiavagant in our chaiity
In the heated months the Jew
leaves the great city and with him
leaves his great national viitues at
home his family home life his busi-
ness capacity his religion Home
ledge counting loom temple are left
behind and all he takes along with
him to the summer resorts are liis so-
ciability his club and his noise Thus
the Christian sees only an edge of
Israels great camp and he reaches a
false conclusion as to the Generals
and the great aimy that follows him
The hest man will cut a sorry figure
if you see only his weakness and
judge him by the woist part of his
nature
Brethren let us show ourselves to
our Christian fellow citizens In the sum-
mer resorts in our national characters
I do not mean that you should leave
your club at homo for you needtyo
