CASE OF THE WEAK SQUIRT
or
HOW TO KEEP WINDSHIELD WASHERS GOING. .Roger Chaney
Porsche began installing windshield washers
as standard equipment before Detroit had thought
much about it. These systems were fairly reli-
able too, but people forgot to add antifreeze
(alcohol) before freezing weather or didn't use
the washers often to exercise them, so they
froze (and broke) or corroded (and wouldn't work
in either case).
The nozzles on the 356A were the worst off-
enders. The nozzles were metal with metal check
valves. The valves corroded easily and jammed
open (causing pumping trouble) or closed allow-
ing no spray at all. These could be kept free
by removing periodically and soaking in kerosene
or Liquid Wrench for about a day and rinsing, or
by unsoldering the nozzle supply tube and dis-
carding the ball. The latter measure required
the addition of an in-line check valve or a T
check valve. You can make an in-line valve with
two sizes of clear plastic tubing and the balls
removed from the-nozzles or any small metal or
plastic ball (install at "a" on the diagram
below); or buy Porsche line check valve used on
the 356B, part no. 644.628.743.05 (install in
line at "a" also). You can also buy a T check
