Words from

by Cecil R. Biggers, Lutheran Lay Minister
In the sixteenth week of the Season of
Pentecost, we learn something of what it means to be a
disciple of Christ and what it means to be a
Teacher/Preacher of the gospel of Christ, as we study
Isaiah 50: 4-9, Psalm 116: 1-9, James 3: 1-12, and Mark
8: 27-38.
Isaiah tells of the "Teacher’; the Lord God has em-
powered him to sustain the weary with a word. The Lord
God has awakened the Teacher to listen as a student to
the word of God. Because of his belief in the Lord God,
the Teacher is beaten, tortured and insulted, but the
Teacher feels no shame for he is God’s. The Teacher
knows that God will vindicate his work. Let us pray that
the Lord God will strengthen our faith that we may stand
together in our faith.
The Psalmist sings a song of individual thanksgiving
for God’s deliverance of the Psalmist from the land of
the dead to the land of the living. The Psalmist has ex-
perienced an incident which leaves him feeling lifeless,
already as the dead. Through prayer and supplication,
God responds to the Psalmist and guides him back to a
close relationship with him. So it is with us, dear Chris-
tian, there are many things in this life which beat us
down, which suck the very will to live from us; yet, our
relief is only a prayer away.
James warns the early Church that those who ’teach’
will be held to a stricter standard than other believers.
He then warns of the evils that our tongues create and
how difficult it is to control the tongue. "From the same
mouth comes blessing and cursing." "With it (the
tongue) we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we
curse those who are made in the likeness of God". Pray
that the Holy Spirit will enable you to control your
tongue to the glory of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Jesus has ventured into Gentile territory he returns to
the area of the Decapolis and at Caesarea Philippi, asks
his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" The dis-
ciples report—John the Baptist, Elijah, One of the
Prophets. Jesus then asks, "But who do you say that I
am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah". Yes,
Peter has understood Jesus' title, but he has yet to rec-
ognize what that title means. Jesus tells the disciples and
the crowd, "If any want to become my followers, let
them deny themselves and take up their cross and fol-
low me." This is not the self-denial of not eating too
much chocolate cake, self-denial here means re-defin-
ing oneself in Christ! We must live as Christ lives. Being
a Christian is a way of life; you see Jesus did not say
worship me or know about me, Jesus said, "Follow me!"
May the Holy Spirit give you the endurance to lead
the disciple life.
