Cleveland Indians Football Recap
by Randy Zeringue
On Halloween night the
Indians tricked the Jasper Bull-
dogs while treatingCoach Randy
Rowe and his staff to the first
Class 4-A playoff game in C leve-
iand football history. By defeat-
ing Jasper, the Indians guaran-
teed a first place finish in District
19-4A, a feat never before ac-
complished. The Indians' 1997
battlecry, "Expect Victory!" was
evident Friday night as the Indi-
ans bounced back from a half-
time defeat of 24-19 to capture a
41-38 victory on Homecoming
night in Jasper.
Ivan 'Tuffy' Williams
scored from 60 yards out with 11
min., 20 seconds to go in the first
quarter; the extra point by Cody
Barton made the score 7-0.
Jasper’s Chris Maulsby kicked a
30 yard field goal; Coby Malone's
7 yard run and extra point by
Maulsby put Jasper up 10-7 with
1 min., 56 seconds showing in the
first quarter.
Tuffy Williams scored
his second of 4 touchdowns on
the evening by running 51 yards,
the extra point attempt was
blocked and the Indians held a
13-10 lead with 11 min., 42 sec-
onds remaining in the second
quarter. Malone's 7 yard run and
Maulsby's extra point put Jasper
ahead 17-13 with 9 min., 1 sec-
ond to go in the second quarter.
Kealvin Armstrong of Jasper ran
a 3 yard touchdown, the extra
point by Maulsby was good and
the Bulldogs led 24-13 with 57
seconds left in the half.
As we have seen all sea-
son, never count the Indians out.
The Indians took over at the Bull-
dog 35 yd. line with 49 seconds
until half-time. Eric Walker
hauled in a40 yard pass reception
from LaJace Eleby to move the
Indians to the Jasper 25 yd. line.
Tuffy Williams rammed it in from
1 yard out to leave the Indians
down by 5 points, 24-19.
The Indians rode the
momentum of the first half into
the third quarter. The Indian de-
fense stiffened to hold the Bull-
dogs on their first possession of
the second half. Eleby fired a 66
yard touchdown pass to Jaworski
Fletcher; Eleby ran in the 2 point
conversion and the Indians took
the lead 27-24 with 6 minutes, 42
seconds left in the third quarter.
Desmond Cruse inter-
cepted a Jasper pass to give the
Indians the ball in Bulldog terri-
tory at the 45 yard line. Tuffy
Williams scored his 4th touch-
down on a 26 yard run; the extra
point by Barton made the score
34-24 with 3 min., 34 seconds
left in the third quarter.
With 2 min., 41 seconds
remaining in the contest and the
Indians holding a 34-24 lead and
it looked as though the win was
in the bag. However, Jasper's
Travis Primrose completed a 9
yard touchdown pass to Derick
Armstrong; the extra point by
Maulsby made the score 34-31
with 2 min., 33seconds left in the
ball game. Jasper attempted an
on-side kick, but Prince Davis
hung on to the ball and the Indi-
ans took possession. Eleby 'The
Magician' turned the corner on
the left side and rambled 48 yards
for a touchdown; the extra point
by Barton put the Indians up 41-
31 with .'1 minute, 31 seconds
remaining in the contest. Jasper's
Ronald Beatty completed a 50
yard touchdown pass to Derick
Armstrong; the extra point was
good and the score was 41-38
with 24 seconds left in the game.
Prince Davis, again, re-
covered the on-side kick, despite
being knocked around like a
bowling ball. The Indians ran out
the clock and celebrated their
District 19-4A Championship.
The Indian offensive line played
exceptional, continual ly blowing
holes against a much larger Jas-
per team. Cody Barton, Prime
Davis, Robert Jones, Kennon
Patton, Chris Jones, Walker Ross,
Jerome Roberts, Bo Aaron and
Keflyn Wildridge allowed the
Indians to amass 441 yards total
offense. Williams was the lead-
ing ground gainer with 187 yards
on 14 carries.
Our congratulations to
Coach Rowe in his first year as
Cleveland head coach. The Indi-
ans are playing football like a
well-o’iled machine. They are
playing with desire, heart and
poise. Be in the stands Friday
n ight when the Indians finish the
regular season against Silsbee in
Indian Stadium.
