The Woman’s Club of Cleve-
land met November 11, in the
home of Phyllis Smith, with
Nelda Clifton as co-Hostess.
Kathryn Johnson voiced the
opening prayer, and the pledges
to the American and Texas flags
were led by Joanne Thigpen. The
minutes and treasurer’s report
were read and approved. Federa-
tion Counselor, Mary Lou
Bounds, reported on the District
Board Meeting in Port Arthur on
October 21. Four representatives
from Cleveland attended. Carol
Jordan read the correspondence.
There were thank you notes to the
club for donations to Interfaith,
Northside Elementary School,
and Libraries 2000 Project.
Carol Jordan spoke of the Book
Fair at Northside Elementary
School to be held on November
19. She asked for four volunteers
to serve as judges: Claire Barker,
Jean McAdams, Phyllis Smith
and Sue Gassiott responded. The
students were to dress as a char-
acter in a book they read, and an-
swer the questions the judges
asked about the book. There
were three winners from the two
grades at Northside School.
Sue Gassiott reported on the
large amount of food donations
for Interfaith last month.
The Womans’ Club will pro-
vide a salad table for the Senior
Citizens’ Christmas Dinner De-
cember 3.
Members who have AT&T
Long Distance service and other
qualifying services were asked to
enroll in “AT&T Points for
Schools.” A designated school
will earn five points for every
dollar customers spend on quali-
fying services. The school can
redeem points for free computer
hardware and software. Forms
were handed out to those who
qualified. i
The president appointed Claire
Barker, Joanne Dishong and
Joanne Thigpen to serve on the
nominating committee for the
2000-2002 club year officers.
The Program was on American-
ism/Patriotism. Peggy Dodson,
a history teacher at Cleveland
Junior High School, was guest
speaker. Using club member par-
ticipation, she presented an inter-
esting program on patriotic songs,
which were discussed. Many
songs have been composed that
reflect patriotism to our country,
especially during war time,
Texas patriotic songs were also
discussed. This program brought
back many memories to members
and was enjoyed by all.
The next meeting will be in the
home of Billie Jean McMahon
December 14. Members were re-
minded to bring Toys for Inter-
faith, and a Christmas ornament
for gift exchange, by Bette Greer
