an anonymous noto commencing
You and Miss Murphy aro married
Hu tore it up near Mansileld JIo
didnt want any man or woman on
earth toieoit
Mr JJall asked Did you show It to
anybody
Mr Eaton replied that ho certainly
wouldnt swear It unless ho did Yes
ho would tell He showed it to J C
Johnson a New Orleans detectlvi
lie was a tall man with light mous-
tache Ho employed this detective to
reo who wrote tho anonymous letter
Wont to Mansileld and camo back
He and Jtufus Chatham aud tho de-
tective met somewhero out there
pointing Jtufus Chatham took
the buggy back The detectlvo came
hack and told him that ho had got un
der Dr Murphys bed aud he was
talking to his wife aad heard him say
that ho wrote thqm
Mr Hall asked Supposo that it
cau bo shown that Dr Murphy and
his wife slept in dltlerent beds
Mr Eaton replied that ho had wilt
lerit that he could exonerate her and
MIks Jtannio about it and sho said
that the detective is just trying to pet
your money Father and mother
sliii in uiffihkxt unas
They have slept that way over since I
was a Httlo girl-
Ie < iii H JJlum bent tho detectlvo
up They could telegraph at his ex-
pense if they chose
Mr Ball replied If you will pro
duco Mr C 0 Johnson 1 will jivoyou
100Mr Eaton then said J dont want
your money I dont ask to be
bribed
Mr Ball asked would Leon II
Blum employ such a man as that
Mr Eaton replied that he knew
detectives would do anything
Mr Ball rejoined Was that why
you employed the detective
Mr Eaton went on to explain how
the detectlvo was hero in connection
with another matter Being Inter-
rupted ho said It seemed that Mr
Ball would have him criminate tho
young lady Ho wanted to say that
tho young lady was us virtuous as tho
sno a that falls from heaven He had
risen to his feet and with a powerful
gesture asserted that ho had never by-
word act or deed uttempted to cast a
stain upon lier
Mr Ball asked Did you not say to
newspaper reporter Mr Halloy that
alts yonder at the table that you mot
Miss Murphy in tho Germanla court
that sho was wearing a lowneck dress
and you thrust a 100 bill under her
collar
Air Knton again arose and rftislng
his hand in irestlculatlou said I did
not say to Mi Halley that I put a
MOO bill down her collar and If Mr
Halloy sayB that J did ho Is
AN INFAMOUS lilAIt
In the further questioning tho witness
said that Mr Ball was trying to make
blm criminate himself
Mr Haney asked his reason for de-
stroying the letter Mr Eitou replied
that It was because ho thought sho had
no connection with it
Ills brother employed Mr Thomas
Mr Thomas told blm afterwards that
he had got tho thing down lino that
the littlo girl had denied having taken
Miss Murphy tho box that there was
a consideration of a dress Ho gave
Mr Thomas 1100 Hegavo Mr John

man replied and said tho rial camo
out at the request ot Or Murphy and
w ent out into a speech on the points of
woman from which he was interrupt-
ed by one of tho council amidst great
applnubd
Mr Ball said ho know why the
ehaigo that Dr Murphy instituted the
trial J he other side wanted to Iry to
shift tho responsibility of chniges irom
themselves to Dr Murphy
Mr Ball then read tho letter which
shows how the Iilul originated
Mr Fin man said this kind of trial
was not what they wanted nnd stated
that Dr Murphy had llrst given the
nroriiiation to iho public bv consent
ing to tho publication ami Hint Mr
Eaton Wauled to clear his nanio of 11
stain cast Upon It by such reports
Better A dated Januar Oth was
read In whleh S M Furman said he
lelt that he had deeply wronged Dr
Murphy nnd his daughter and ottering
his friendship from thence forward
The explanation was made by Mr
Furjuaii that Professor White had
acknowledged kissing Miss Murphy
nnd hence 1 ho change of S M Fur
mans reelings In regard to Dr Mur-
phy and his daughter
Mr V M mice was sworn and
said 1 am a stenographer I have
had experience In deciphering hand-
writing My business has led mo
very closely to study handwrltlug I
have 110 opinion in the matter but
my experience has led me to examine
closely Tho anonymous letter was
hauded him He mid lu letters N B
audi 1 notice no simllailty tho word
Eatou in tho anonymous mid the
signature hi the genuine ouo Is simi
lar the pen Is carried down and both
aro finished in tho sauio way The
letters hear a strong resemblance but
I would not give opinion There Is
not suillelcut evidence to say tho two
words Eiton were written by tho
same party hut there Is strong resem-
blance In litem I notice the charac-
teristic of tho letter W thai they aro
detached in all oa cs Anonymous let-
ter Is coitaiuly inn disguised hand
In disguising an attempt is made to
write backland Tho party who
wrote the anonymous letter had no
great skill 1 think the writer is not
aspoara peuuriu as tho anonymous
letters show In tho anonymous let-
ter and the letter K the two words
Eaton have somo characteristics The
capital As aro almost identical I
notice something similar lu the letter
T In my Judgment tho signatures
bear such resemblance that they wero
written by tho samo person I notice
the same similarity lu tho letter In
letter S I notice samo characteristics
but not so strongly as lu letter N I
notice In two words church that both
words are separated on tho letter It
Both words are terminated by an up-
ward touch of the pen 1 would not
say they wero written by the samo
person I notice in the
two letters tho anonymous
one and N that tho y in al-
most every caso 1 separated from oil
lu you or your The initial W is sep
arate lu almost every case In both let-
ters I notice the final t in both let
ters aro similar I notice quite a
resemblance In tho Its In both letters
they aro pointed In both letters very
characteristic in almost every caso lu
both lttteis I notice lu tho word
youi tho last letter Is the same kind
In both letters tho final r Is tiiudo
something like a v I dont know
that I beo any other similarities 1
should say they were written by the
samo persons lit my judgment the
characteristics of the word Eaton
aro so strong and the other character
istics are so strong 1 should think they
were written by the samo persons 1
have been Introduced taMiss Murphy
I dont know Unit I uver spoko to her
since I dont know Mr Jiaton
citossiWAMivnr
Tho strongest evidence is lu the
word Eaton but other strong evi-
dence appears throughout the letters
Mr Furman then toDk tho letters
and asked for rcsemblaiicesnnd point
ed out that tho writing was dissimilar
in many inspects After a wordy war
between counsel the word Eaton
which occurs In both letters was
taken up and tho witness said that ho
thought tho words Eaton wero
alike and that In conjunction with
other similarities warranted his Say-
ing they wero written by tho tiuiie
person He slated that tho word
Eaton was written two ways hi the
anonymous letter Witness said par-
ties were often mistaken but It was
not a matter of opinion There aro
very few eases where two letters could
bo written in tho samo characteristics
by two persons Single words can be
written allko by two persons Jt is
practically Impossible for a person to
write a whole letter without letting
some of his charucterisCIcs appear
JJased opinion on general rhuraclcrls
Hat but the words Eatou aro strong-
est evidence
HU JOHN NICHOLS
then took tho stand and vas sworn
Tho letters 1013 and 10 genuine and
him
letter IC disputed wero handed
by counsel and ho was asked
his judgment as to whether they
were written by the samo peison
Letter K is the famous ono com-
mencing Heros my story and the
others wero written by Miss Murphy
Mr Nichols said in his opinion the
the fame person did not write them
The letters J and K were not written
bv the same party who wrote letter 10
Letter K disputed was compared
with Iettcr7 genuine Witness stated
that no reseinblunco existed between
them Letter L was pronounced not
cnulne Jitter I was pronounced
not genuine This letter Is tho ono
appointing the famous buggy ride
Letter N was pronounced not genu-
ine All the disputed letters wero pio
nouneed not ceriulno by the witness
The anonymous letter was then com-
pared with geuulno letters of Euton
In a good many respects the anony-
mous aud tho geuulno letter looked as
though they were written by the same
aUio word Eatou showed gteat simi-
larity In both letters Tho letter T all
through the letters wero crossed simi-
larly Jn his Judgment the anony-
mous letter und tho letters pronounced
genuine were written by thosamo 1 arty
Grossoxainiiied He had been ex
anilning liandwilting tor ten years
A puny starting to disguise hand
would liomorecarerul lu the start than
afterwards Tho wrltor would give
himself away in writing tho fcatuo
name several times Was a similarity
