President Paddock of the Fort Worth
and Rio Grande said yesterday that up to
this time the only arrangement made with
tne Texas and Pacific bg his road was the
building of a side track connecting with
the Texas and Pacific for the storage of
the curs loaded with steel rails now on
the way to Fort Worth The company
had expected to be able to run the rails
right out on arrival but were delayed by
the nonarrUal of bridge timbers wnich
would however soon be here
Capt 1addock said they were
receiving ties daily now In
recsrd to the statement published in a
Dallas paper that the Texas and Pacific
was connected with the Fort Worth and
Rio Grande the captain said that no rail-
road man or corporation west of the Mis-
sissippi river had anything whatever to
do with the road except the officers and
directors who lived in Fort Worth The
article in question was the result purely
of imagination and conjecture

The First Excursion
Sunday afternoon the officials of the
Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe invited a
few guests to join them in an excursion
over their line to the bridge across Bed
river The special train started at 330
p m and the following officials and
guests were aboard J II Phillips
master of transportation T W Jackson
general right of way agent Gen Thomas
chief of construction from here north
Mr Love agent at this place Mr Par-
ker and Mr Collum
The guests consisted of Capt Dave
Turner and son Luther Maj Mimms F
A Sherwood Campbell Turner Charles
Swasey of Fort Worth Morris Cohi > and
a reporter for the Register W H Cole
was the conductor and to him belongs
the honor of taking f the first excursion
train over the Gulf Colorado and Santa
Fe north Upon arriving at the bridge
all alighted fnd walked across Red river
on the temporary bridge The bridge
proper when completed will measure
SOOfeet from end to end requiring five
piers four spans of iron work and
the latter will aggregate the
enormous weight of over 1000000
rounds Four of the piers are ready for
use only one remaining uncompleted
By the latter part of this week or the first
of next the temporary bridge will be
ready for the trainer and then it will be
on to the north
The road was in fine condition between
here and the bridge though a little rough
in some places where the ballast is incom-
plete The officials were highly pleased
and it is useless to say that the
guests on board were elated over the fact
that they were the first to make a trip
over the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe
north on an excursion It was a pleasant
trip indeed even though the wind was
cutting and cold Gainesville Register

thought they had been unjustly treated

There are parties in this city who claim
to be in the possession ol important
news relative to the discovery of coal in

It is said that the discovery was made
about twentyfive miles north of here
and the minps are located and of the
same vein as that at or near McAllister

legislation is necessary before the mines
can be developed and as little informa-

unlimited quantity and a company has
been organized to operate the mines

A DOUISLK RACE
Special to tho Gazette
Washington Jan 10 The Washing-
ton correspondent of the New York
World who formerly resided in the
South and knows the lay of the land geo-
graphically sent the following dispatch
to that paper last evening coccerning the
departure from Washington of the rival
candidates lor the Texas senatorship
It was 130 oclock yesterday morning
when Congressman Reasan started via
the Virginia Midland Railroad for Austin
the Texas capital Not more than twenty
minutes after Mr Reagans train pulled
out of the passenger station one of Sena-
tor Maxeys frieuds reported the fact of
Mr Reagans departure Senator Maxey
at once ordered his trunks packed
aud hurried quickly to the Baltimore and
Ohio office where he engaged sleeping
car accommodations for Austin taking a
through car via St Louis His train
departed at UiltO Mr Reagan having
a few hours the start The
legislature convenes on Tuesday They
are each on trains that with
the scheduled connection will land them
at the Texas capital about Tuesday
noon It is a question of distance or
a long haul against the short The time
in transit through St Louis Maxeys
route is a few hours shorter than
through New Orleans Reagans route
Mr Reagan took breakfast at Charlotte
N C vihile Senator Maxey ate
brown bread and oatmeal in the
Grand Central station at Cincinnati to-
night At 8 oclock Mr Reagan arrived
at Montgomery At the same hour
Senator Maxey crossed the great bridge
over the Rlississippi at St Louis To-
morrow Mr Reagan will cross the Mis-
sissippi at New Orleans while at that
hour Mr Maxey wil > have reached the
soil of his loved Texas at Texarkana
Mr Reagan will not place his
feet upon the sacred soil of the
Lone Star State until tomorrow
noon when he will cross the placid Si
biae Pass At the presest writing Sen-
ator Msxey is gliding swiftly over the
steelrailed Iron Mountain road of Jay
Gould while Mr Reagan is sleeping the
sleep of the innocent in one
of Mr Pullmans palsce cars on
the Louisville and Nashville ap-
proaching the wavewashed shores
of the gulf coast It is reported tonigut
that Mr It agan today after bavins been
informed of the departure of Senator
Maxey telegraphed Senator Stanford
asking permission for a special engine
and car over he Atlantic system of the
Southern Pacific from New Orleans to
San Antonio This report however is
not corroborated and the chances are that
it is not well founded At the rate at
which they are going and with the
aid of special engines they will reach
Austin about daylight on Tuesday morn-
ing Mr Maxey is nearer the capital
now than his rival though the road over
which he is traveling is not of the same
smooth surface and graceful ballast that
is found on the road over which Mr Rea-
gan is traveling It is not only a race
for the senatorship bnt as well a lively
race as to which will be the first to greet
the legislature on opening day
THAT FEDERAL COURT
Special to the Gazette
Washington Jan 10 The committee
on the judiciary have decided to report in
favor of leaving the federal court at Gra-
ham at least for the present Their con-
clusions are as follows
The court was located in Graham iu
the northern district of Texas in 1S79
Since that time the status of th popula-
tion has in a great measure changed
and is yet changing Railroads
have been built and the
country has settled up New towns have
been established and railroads are now
being projected and built New counties
are being organized and it is impossible
to determine with reasonable certainty
which ought to characterize the perma
nent location of the court
just where It ought to be
established if a cnange is made
at ell Great inconvenience results fiom
the present location but it is contended
that Graham will soon be connected with
various counties In the clivislonby railroad
and that better facilities will be afforded
for attending the sessions of the court
There is pending in the senate a bill for
establishing courts at DeLison and Paris
in the northern and eastern judicial dis
tricts of Texas and also for a court in the
Indian territory The bill has twice
passed the house with great unanimity
and will probably pass the senate during
the session On the other hand there is
a strong disposition to locate a court
with federal jurisdicion In the Indian
Territory which shall have juris-
diction over all cases arising
within that territory and reservations
attached to it Should these bills be-
come laws or either of them new ques-
tions would arise with regard to the ter-
ritory now returnable to Graham and
elsewhere in the northern and eastern
districts cf Texas The entire
situition with regard to the
border counties in Northern Texas
is wholly unsettled aud it Is impossible
in view of all the environments to de-
termine what is the proper thing to be
done In view of all the facts the com-
mittee believe it to be inexpedient to
recommend a change at present and
think it advisable to await further devel-
opments of popuation andjeommerce
introduced bytexans
Special to the Gazette
Washington Jan 10 The following
bills of interest to Texas were introduced
today By Mr Sjyers a bill author-
izing the secretary of war to convey a
certain tract of land in San Antonio
known as the arsenal block on the south
and eastern portion of said city for edu-
cational purposes
Mr Crain a bill to promote the effi-
ciency of the civil service and to estab-
lish a retired list for persons employed

person serving in the United States serv
ice fortyfive years shall be retired
with threefourths cf the salary he was

thirtyfive years twothird pay and thirty

troduced a bill to pay Ernest A Ileman
