Columbia Tkx Sept 27 The ktest
advices from Mstasorda county indicate
that while things are still unsettles prac-
tically the riot is under the control oi
thopo who have been on the scene Pice
its inception and that the military
ill have to go no further
than this point or Brazaria Nothing
more definite ita to the cause of the trou-
ble can be ascertained than wes wired
yesterdry The whole trouble has been
conceived and brought forth on the place
of exGovernor Wells Thompson waich
not a white tenant on it has
for years been gathering to il
el the very worst element of the negro
race The insurrectionists are led by a
mulatto Oliver Saepparuwho is reported
an being endowed
WITH CONSIDERABLE TALENT
both as a strategist and general com-
mander The skirmish of Sunday eve-
ning so far vcritted bears out the report
that three negrots were killed principal
sKnbng whom was Barton Hawkins
second in command cf the insurrection-
ists and second in ability only to Oliver
Sheppsrd It seem3 that Snerie Wads
worth had discharged the nosse from
Brazoria county on Sunday The resi-
dents ot that lower county already
possessed cf warrants for the ar-
rest of the leaders of the
disturbance were looking for the parties
named in the warrants when they sud-
denly came upon a log cabin
LITERALLY ALIVE WITH ARMED NEGROES
Upon their approaching the cabin the
negroes opened fire upon them but
fortunately at too long range The whites
then advanced upon them at a brisk trot
and fired upon them with the resultbe
fore mentioned Humors had it that in
this skirmish two men Wharton Bates
and George Lane were wounded but to
our great satisfaction they are both
shown to be unharmed The Light
Guards of Houston after refresh-
ing themselves here left at 303
this evening on the steamer Emily P for
Brazoria where they will await instruc-
tions Sheriffs Waasworth and Hickey
requested this action of Ihem as they
were uncertain if they
COULD CONTROL AFFAIRS
without their assistance It is now be-
lieved that the backbone of the affair ia
broken Oliver Sheppard was missed
from amongst them jesterday and scour-
ing parties have been tent out over the
country in search of him With Oliver
Sheppard a reingee and Barton Hawkins
dead but little trouble ia expected from
the balance The report wired
from Wharton of this affair is
incorrect and calculated to do this conn
try an injustice Tne negro Jerry Mes-
sina has not been found either
DEAD OR ALIVK
and the circumstances as cited yesterday
indicated that he ia alive and trying to
escape punishment for cow stealing
The outlook yesterday and the day before
was decidedly gloomy Parties from the
country reported armed negroes to be
riding around and couriers being dis-
patched in every direction to arouse the
country The merchants though refused
to sell them any ammunition and this
coupled with the report that Matagorda
was under their control has doubtless
waived off a general insurrection To-
night every one seema satisfied that
THE CRISIS IS TASSED
and that a day or to will put all back to
its accustomed condition As the Light
Guards were on the point of embarking
this evening the Pearson Guards of
llichmond twentysix strong headed by
Colonel Pearson and Captain Wilsonrode
up and saluted them with three rousing
cheera to which the Houston boys re-
sponded with a hearty good will There
may be no need for the militia
to go on active duty but their
very presence has benefited this
county no little The average negro
here being ertron2i7 ignorant end
knowing how much his race outnumbers
Matagorda and that no more trouble is
expected at this tluie Your coirespond

the whites ia this co auty could not be
made to believe by ocular demonstration
that forces suiliient to outnumber him

applicable in Matagorda coanty where
travelers are few and far between
